go in and help her fall asleep?
« on: March 31, 2010, 21:24:08 pm »
My daughter is in her room at the moment. I put her down around 4:20 and ssh/pat until she stopped crying and then I left the room around 4:30. I can still hear her making noises and I know she isn't asleep and it is now 5:20pm. Do I go in there and try and help her fall asleep or do I let her continue what she is doing? She isn't upset, is fairly quiet but I know not asleep. Do I wake her to feed at 6:30pm (she last ate at 3:30pm) or do I let her get her 1.5hour nap?

Thanks

By the way, she is almost 10 weeks old.

I see by the time stamps, it's too late for an answer to help at this point.  With a 10 week old, I'd probably go and try to help with more shush/pat to avoid OT.

Thanks for replying. On a similar note...what takes precedence, nap or feed? When it takes her a while to fall asleep and her next feed time is creeping up, I am always unsure if the nap or the next feed is more important. Should I be waking my daughter to feed her or if I should be allowing her to sleep so that she gets at least a 1.5 nap? If I don't allow her to sleep, it sometimes means waking her after 1 hour, which is not a long enough nap. Thanks for your help.

Tough call . . . if you're in a period of sleep training, then the pattern is very important and I would wake to preserve the feed.  Just in general, and especially with such a young LO, I'd tend to be more flexible, remembering that it's a routine not a schedule.

I'd probably let her sleep until 1.5 hours as that's a nice full nap, then wake her to feed.  The competing tension is that on one hand you don't want an overly tired baby, but, on the other hand, you want to get in your day time feeds in a timely manner so that she's not waking at night for feeds.  I tend to prioritize keeping baby from getting OT over feed timing personally, in part because my babies tended to cluster feed intensely in the evening, so they seemed to get enough calories that way.
