Bad idea to introduce a musical lovey at 2yo?
« on: April 07, 2010, 20:31:30 pm »
Hi, ds is just 2 and for the first time ever he has been sleeping really well for the last few months. He has never had a dummy or lovey but the last few weeks he has needed his 3 teddies with him when he goes to bed. I have been okay about this but today he went a step further and wanted his singing seahorse in bed with him. It is a toy he has never shown much interest in before - if you press it's tummy it plays gentle music.

My question is am I introducing a prop here? I don't want him to only fall asleep when he has his seahorse and the music is playing.

Ta very much

If it were me, I'd be worried he'd roll on it in his sleep and it would sing him AWAKE! LOL! Also, toddlers can get involved with stuff and that keeps them awake too.  So, to me it's not so much an issue of it being a 'prop', as it being either a distraction or a potention middle-of-the-night disaster!  :)

My son had a similar request at one point (for a noisy toy) and I told him the toy was too 'crunchy' to sleep with -- that it would hurt him if he laid on it while sleeping.  So we opted to put the toy on a dresser where it could be near Owen while he slept.  We then added saying 'night-night' to that toy in our nightly ritual, and that seemed to satisfy him.  Maybe you can do something similar? Like, play 1 song during your wind down, and then have DS put the seahorse on his night stand or dresser for the night.  You could even have him tuck it in under a wash cloth or something.

Well I hid it tonight and he didn't mention it, so fingers crossed it's a matter of out of sight out of mind. Will just have to remember to find a better hiding place once he's asleep. I really do appreciate your advice becky. I think otherwise I would have left it in view tonight and he would have wanted it.
