Activity for 6 week old?
« on: April 07, 2010, 21:53:42 pm »
How much activity does a 6 week baby need before getting over tired or not tired enough? What types of activity?
Thanks

Hi there

For a six week, A time is 1hr to 1hr and 15min. That includes, from eyes open to eyes shut.
Below is a general guide. Some los vary and get more/less.

Awake time for babies
Newborn 50-60 mins
1 month 60 mins-hour and 15
2 months 1 hour and 15 - 20 mins
3 months 1 hour and 20 - 30 mins
4 months 1 hour and 45 - 2 hours
5 months 2 hours - 2.25 hours
Late 5 months/early 6 months 2.25-2.5 hours
6.5 - 7 months 2.75-3 hours. Some are getting more.
8 - 10 months 3 - 4 hours. Some are getting more.
11 - 12 months 3.5 -4.5 hours. Some are getting more if moved early to 1 nap

As for becoming OT, OS plays a role. I would normally start wind down about 25min before-ie walking around the house, singing a lullaby etc. At six weeks, I remember my lo would easily become OT and the cause was normally because she was OS.
I believe the rule of thumb for many los is that a 45min nap equals UT and a 30min nap equals OT.

Our LO often is in a drowsy state and then wakes cranky crying again.  Burps are done, appears there is no gas...as he has gassy issues and when he does it's obvious.  He takes the soother and calms then if it falls out cranky again and it's the silly game until he is asleep and in his crib.  Occasionally I have but him in a bouncy chair to keep him busy and then in another chair that is more soothing and he doses off on his own.  This is when the timing is just right and he's ready for his nap.  The times when I have to stay and rock him and walk around the house much longer than necessary must be from OS/OT correct?  What are the cues I'm looking for in him to recognize that he's tired before it's too late.  Is it the 3 yawns?  Flaying arms and refusing soother means what??

Thank you so much
Natasha

I am not expert but at the first yawn, wind down usually begins. After the third yawn los are about to enter sleep mode. If not put to asleep, OT will surface. TBH in the beginning I would follow the clock and my los cues to see how she reacted.
Is your lo BF or bottle fed? Are you swaddling? When the flaying arms begin, is it around nap time?

Can you post your EASY?

Thanks

I wish I had a predictable EASY right now but I don't. :(

There is no typical day yet and it's frustrating.  Perhaps he is in a GS right now as he woke often last night and only fed for 10 minutes and then went to sleep only to wake in an hour...this happened all night.  The day was awful.  No sleep, cranky, gassy, fed then pulled away often.  When he did fall to sleep it was usually from crying and OT.  So confused right now????

I do recall that age gets a little crazy! ;D There are many growth spurts until 6months.
I know it is difficult to remember, but can you post a typical day in E A S format.(it can be general)
