2-1 transition- 1 nap split in 2??
« on: April 10, 2010, 02:20:03 am »
Hi,

Last week we started the 2-1 transition and it was great, days of 2.5-3 hour sleeps (sometimes LO would wake and talk for 5 mins and go back to sleep) and I thought it was going to be easy!
Then LO had one day where she woke after 45mins and didn't want to be in her cot, lots of crying etc. I got her up, thinking she would have a CN later in the day but she grizzled and cried the whole time she was awake (45mins) so I put her back to bed and she slept for another hour.

Then this week she went to her carers while I was working and had 3 days of 2 naps (all pretty short but she doesn't sleep well there). Today looks like this

7.50am (I went and woke her- doesn't usually sleep this late)
12.20pm nap
1.05 wake and cried (5mins) then quiet for 15mins
1.25 awake and crying so I got her up and she had to go back down after 35mins awake as she was obviously tired.

Is this a common problem in the 2-1 transition? I didn't want to keep her up as she was not happy but it seems a strange way to get to one nap- a short nap, followed by short awake, then another nap.

So far she has been quiet for 15mins, so I'm guessing she is asleep up there.

I'm not sure about this, so hopefully you'll get some other replies, but since she ends up going back to sleep after you get her up, could you try to help her back to sleep initially instead of getting her up, so the nap isn't so split.  Would she respond to you going in and rubbing her back or doing WIWO to extend the nap?  The goal being if she gets used to going back to sleep, she will start to do it by herself.

Also, it seems as she might be getting a little OT since the first week she was doing longer naps.  I know a lot of people do a couple days of one nap and then if it gets shorter, a day of two naps.  Hope you get some more advice.  The 2-1 transition is tough!

Yesterday I thought she went back to sleep for 30mins as all went quiet in her room but we had a major melt down at bedtime so am guessing she was extremely OT. She had a good 12.5 hour sleep last night and is in a much better mood.

WIWO works at bedtime of we need it so might try during the day

2-1 is confusing!
