Night waking at 4:15am for 6.5months old
« on: April 19, 2010, 22:13:25 pm »
My DD is a spirited. She wakes up at 4:15am almost every night and can't settle back to sleep until around 6am.
Started EASY when she was 2.5mth. She falls asleep on her own most of the time. She can nap from 1.5 to 2 hrs during the day. We used to put her to sleep at 7.30pm but she woke up at 12am and every 2 hours. We then moved her bed time to 8pm, then 9pm... she still woke up at 12-1am. So recently we moved her bedtime to 10-10.30pm. We start the bedtime routine at about 10: bath, massage, read and sing then bed. She seems pretty good with this and was able to sleep thru the night for 2 nights. Starting from 3 weeks ago, she started to wake up at 4.15am. Occasionally, she is able to settle back to sleep after a few cries or when I put my hands on her before she screams. But most of the time, she cries/ screams and sleeps at the same time. I tried pu/pd, it seems agitate her even more. Shuu/pat works to calm her down, but she cries again once I stopped. She is never a good night sleeper, she used to stamp her feet so hard that wakes herself up. Swaddling not working now as she struggle to move her arms wakes herself too. Getting so frustrated that I know she can sleep thru the night but don't know the reason why she keeps waking up at the same time.
Here's her EASY routine on a good day:
E: 7 BF (back to sleep after that)
A: 9-10.30
S: 10.30 - 12
Y:

E:12 BF
A: 12.15-2
S: 2-4
Y:

E: 4 BF
A: 4:15-6
S: 6-7:30
Y:

E: 8
A: ... till bedtime routine at 10 and goes to bed at 10.30. DF at 11.30

Please give me some advice. Thanks!!

I remember hearing that waking up in the early hours of the night (i.e. The 12 or 1:00 waking you spoke of) is due to OT. A 10:30 bedtime is really late. I wonder if she'd prefer an earlier bedtime rather than later, keeping the A time beforehand a little shorter. Just a thought.

Hmmm.... must give this some thought, but it's almost the kids' bedtime here so I'm posting to make it easier to get back to. :)

Thanks, lilredhen89. Will try to let her sleep earlier. But, my DH said she may have too much energy so she stamps her feet when she sleeps.

My DS often kicks around a lot too, but especially when he is OT.  Could the stamping be a form of self-soothing?  Tracy said in her BWSAYP book that some babies throw their legs up and then slam them on the mattress as a way to settle.
