UT/OT or teething? Help!!
« on: May 12, 2010, 09:23:47 am »
LO is just coming up to 18months old now and has mostly been on 1 nap for a while. Sometimes at the weekends he has 2 naps but that's fine.
These last few weeks we've got wretched canines cooming in causing much misery and copious amount of drool! Usually when he goes to bed he asleep in like 5-10 mins but lately he's been chatting to himself for 30mins to 1 hr so is this teething related UT or OT? His days usually looks like this

0500 wake-up and bottle ( I know its hideously early but believe me we have tried everything!! It just seems like after 10 hrs sleep he's done!)
nap usually 11.30 (1.5-2hrs)
7pm bed
So any ideas - he's in danger of getting OT now because he's chatting to himself for so long.  Should I do a later bedtime? If I move it earlier I get an even earlier wakeup and believe me 5am is early enough!
Shall I just put it down as teething and hope some nrmality returns when thes dreadful teeth are through?

My guess would be OT if he is teething - their A times can lower quite a bit. Are you giving meds before naps? We have been doing the odd 2 nap day too and DS is the same age as your lo. If you think h is getting OT could you do this or do a slightly earlier bedtime?

Just confirming what Becky said.  We've been doing the same at 19 mo.  When my LOs teeth were coming in, there was definitely a drop in A time.  Have you noticed that he falls asleep any differently when you do 2 naps on the weekends?

Rachel Finn is younger but we have pretty much the same schedule for you EXCEPT we are just implementing a later bedtime and finding it may just be working.  When he wakes at his usual EW he's actually tired enough to go back to sleep.  The past two days he woke at 6!

Finn is also teething canines but this has been the most silent teething we have had yet, if that's possible.  They seem to be coming in without a hitch, or it's just the calm before the storm lol  They are just sitting under the gums at the moment.

Personally I think that kind of chatting and taking that long to go off at this age is UT but that's just me.  But that said, he's already doing a really long day with a 7 bedtime so not sure.  I would probably try an earlier bedtime first to rule out OT, and if you get even more kick back then assume UT.

OK thanks for the replies - he's just gone down with some weird nursery lurgy so it might be related to that too.  I put him back in a sleeping bag last night and he settled much quicker and slept till 5.30am which is good for us! He goes down the same whether its 1 nap or 2 naps - he refuses to sleep in his cot during the day and I really don't have the energy to battle that one so he sits quietly on the sofa then pulls up a cushion and goes to sleep on his own and sleeps quite happpily there. So when he's better I'm going to try a sightly earlier bedtime and see what happens, usually that gives us an even earlier wake up and if that doesn't work then we will try a slightly later bedtime.
