Where am I going wrong?
« on: May 26, 2010, 13:39:49 pm »
Hi everyone,

I'd really appreciate some advice!!
My 16wk old DD was in a pretty good routine up until a few days ago and I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to fix it. Our day used to go like this:-

E - 0730
A - 0745-0900
S - 0915-1030/1100
E - 1130
A - 1145-1300
S - 1315-1500
E - 1515
A - 1530-1700
S - 1700-1800
Bath, quiet time, bottle and then in bed by 1930. She'd then sleep through until 07:00 next morning.

Last week we had quite a few night wakenings - all at different times and usually involved drinking 8ozs of milk. These have since stopped *touch wood* so looked like a growth spurt.

However, nap times through the day have just fallen apart.................our 'routine' now looks more like this:-
E - 0730
A - 0745 - 0900
S - 0900 (but doesnt fall asleep til 0930ish) - 1015
E - 1115
A - 1130 - 1230
S - 1245 - 1345
E - 1515
A - 1530 - 1700
S - by this time she is exhausted but cannot fall asleep - really 'jerky' etc

Usually ends up sleeping in my arms (bad I know) but if she doesnt sleep, even a small amount, I cant get her to take a good bedtime feed.

I'm following her 'sleepy signs' as usual. She nuzzles into ur shoulder - almost 'burying' her face which has always been her 'Ive had enough' hint etc!!

The more the day goes on the worse it gets. Usually involves many tears - both hers and mines - and she is tired all the time. Night times are still great - once she's in bed.

If she wakes early from a nap, should I alter the rest of her feeds etc or try to stay in a 4 hourly routine? I dont know what to do - help please.

Julie x

Apologies, have only just realised I should've posted this over in the 'naps' section. Oops!

Hi there

Sorry to read you are struggling but if she was in a good routine before she'll get back to normal so don't worry.   Here is some info:

http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=64158.msg476652#msg476652

3 months 1 hour and 20 - 30 mins
4 months 1 hour and 45 - 2 hours
5 months 2 hours - 2.25 hours

From your routine your A time seems to be 2-2.15 hours?  I'd try to follow the routine that was working for you, so first nap at 9.15.  If you get a decent nap go with what you normally do.  If its less than an hour and you can't extend you may need to reduce the next A time to 1.5-1.45 to avoid OT.  I do think oOT is creeping in through the day.

I'd try keep her feeds 4 hourly but you may find if she has a short nap you EAS will look more like EAS (short nap) then AEAS IYSWIM?

Will she sleep in her buggy?  If you are having a really bad day it might help to take her for a walk in the afternoon just to get her to get some sleep to stop the OT and get you both a break from it all?  She's still young so don't worry about APing the odd nap to keep you both sane at this stage.

How does that sound?
