15 wk old - starting out, need help!!
« on: May 28, 2010, 12:55:52 pm »
Hi

I'm reasonably new to the board and new to being a mum! ;D My (spirited/touchy) son is now 15 weeks old and we have been following a (very) rough EASY routine for most of this - mostly E 3, then 4 hourly. The wee guy has been suffering from reflux, so a typical routine has been near impossible! We seem to have this under control now, so looking to get a better routine in place.

He is on a 4 hourly schedule, but i'm not sure how much A time he should be having?

Unfortunately he takes after his daddy and is an early riser! Usually waking at 5.30 but doesn't cry to be fed and chats to himself for a while. We then usually feed at 6.30-7. How does the A time work with being awake an hour before being fed?

We've also rocked him to sleep for most of the time, so trying without much luck to get him off to sleep on his own. Would really appreciate a good technique for this... as much detail as possible - it's going to be hard going!

Napping has always been a problem, and he gets OT and irritable very quick, leading to short naps and a vicious circle! Getting the 45min naps just now. I've tried HTTJ but he wakes up screaming regardless... is it something to persevere with?

Finally...! I can't be at home all day to get naps in his crib, how to I encourage him to sleep when we are out? Walking in the pram used to be fail-safe but isn't anymore and I think I have the only baby in the planet who doesn't sleep in the car!!!

I know he is OT alot which makes him really (really) grumpy, but it seems no matter when I try to put him to sleep it is a battle.

Help!!!!!! .... and thanks!

About the 45 mins naps, they maybe OT naps, so let's sort the routine out & then see, as for sleeping in the car or pram, we also go through phases where ds just won't sleep in either as well, but we've found that if we speed things up a little, like walk fast with the pram, or drive faster he'll eventually dose off.

Could you post your routine, so that we can have a better idea and help you more?

Hey Yazzie

Thanks for the reply... and sorry for not posting an update sooner!

I sat down and tried to get a sample EASY routine to show you, then realised I wasn't doing EASY at all... just E!!  ??? Over the past few days i've been keeping an eye on what we do and it's pretty obvious we need to start from scratch. So thanks for the links, they were a great help. I'm hoping the fact we keep a 4hr E schedule at the mo will help us with everything else.

The last 2 days have been awful. Not sure if the wee guy is teething a little (surely a bit early???) but he has been so fractious. Every nap has been a battle with hard, painful crying beforehand. He's never really has been able to settle himself after the 45mins, and has been waking up in floods of tears and won't settle back down - even with my help. He's most definitely a very spirited boy, and seems so advanced for his 15 weeks! Always chatting and desperate to know whats going on. He just seems so changable with his moods, and its heartbreaking when he suddenly cries and cries without warning.  :( Think I might look into the spirited baby posts and see if I can see some pointers...

Not sure if he's maybe hungry... he was a comfort-eating refluxer who will keep guzzling until there was no more room! He has 8oz x4 times daily, but I just don't think he could take another oz each time. Spoke to the doc and we might start him on baby rice next week.

We do have a bed/bath routine and he's usually sleeping for 7.30pm. He sleeps sound until 2.30am then is pretty fitful til 5.30-6am when he wakes, so mostly good at night.

Sorry for the random info, my head is a little fuzzy with all the tears! (both Louie and me!!)

:-*...it's a tough stage & I know reflux isn't making it any easier.

I nap battles are either OT or UT, but since he wakes up crying, I'm more inclined to thinks it's OT, just right down ow your day goes, EASY or not & let's see what's going on.

I'd also suggest you check out the reflux boards, there's lots of info there, here's the link:
