Does he have enough fats in diet?
« on: June 13, 2010, 19:37:27 pm »
Hi,
DS is a bit of a string bean. He is tall for his age and skinny. There have never been any issues regarding his weight but I am wondering whether I am giving him enough good fats or just fats in his diet.
He has cheese most days and full fat milk/yoghurt. Should I be doing anything else???
He is 98th centile for height and about 49/50 for weight.
Thanks
bx

What other fats does he get? Coconut oil is a really good one, I stir a teaspoon into Stan's morning porridge it has a lovely flavour and it's supposed to be very good for general health - you can spread it on toast instead of butter - in fact I stir a little bit in wherever I think of it/can. Butter and/or olive oil on veggies and pasta. Avocado pieces for lunch, or avocado/cream cheese sandwiches. Scrambled eggs for lunch, peanut butter on toast as a high protein snack after nursery.

Thanks Anna. I had not thought of coconut oil but that is a great idea. He has butter and olive oil in things. I have not tried nuts with him yet but P Butter would be great. Not sure when it is ok to try nuts? S Eggs he likes now but Avocado he won't touch.
Will keep trying x

Stan never liked avocado til I started hiding them in his beloved Philadelphia sandwiches! I gave Stan peanut butter from about 18 months - of course I watched him like a hawk, but he didn't have any other food allergies or intolerances, and there are no food allergies/intolerances in his family.

As long as there is no family history of allergies, PB should be okay.  We are holding off until 3 for nuts and seafood due to allergies, otherwise after one I would have gone with it.  I've put a bit of olive oil in Spencer's applesauce and she loved it, need to get some coconut oil though...keep forgetting too.

I've given DD peanut butter since 8 months just because we are built very strong in my family.  Bowels of Steel is what we say. :)  She loves PB and does eat peanuts but only when Great Grandma gives her peanut m&m's or almond m&m's.  She loves them of course, who wouldn't.
I  mix cheese into eggs, put pesto on bread, and Alfredo sauce is a big winner here.  I love the olive oil option because it is so handy in cooking and goes great on pasta and veggies.  Does your DS like olives?  I hate them but if I liked them I'd buy them.  They are high in healthy fat also.  Some tofu is very high in fat as well if you are familiar and like tofu.

I'm not fond of avocado plain, but we all chow down like mad on guacamole; I used to feed it to Natalie with a spoon, stirred in a bit of olive oil or flaxseed oil to give it some more good fat.

When you make him chicken, use dark meat; it has more fat than the white.
