2-1 and cranky after forced short nap
« on: July 20, 2010, 19:32:40 pm »
Hi there, just wondering what people's experiences have been when they wake their lo's up during the 2-1 transition.  Today is the first day I've had the guts to try the forced short am nap.  She's doing ok, just not her usual cheerful self. Pretty sensitive and cranky.  Did people find their lo's were cranky after being woken from their nap?  And is it something she'll get used to if I stick with it?  I'd been doing the long am, short pm, and she seemed ok after I woke her up from that, but I don't think that system was working for us so I'm trying the short am.

fyi, She's 10 months. She did her usual 3.5 hours A in the morning and went down easy. I woke her after 55 minutes. Now I'm going to aim for 2 hours and 45 or 3 hours A before her 2nd nap.

Thanks!

Hi there

Welcome to the 2-1 journey. well thats what i call it. My lo is 12 months in a few days and she has been on the 2-1 for about 2 months now. My lo was on the long AM (2 hour nap) and short PM (30 min) for months before the 2-1, but then the OT crept in and had NW and EW, so thought id start her on the short AM long PM, and it is working much better for her, it does take a few days for there body clock to get used to the new time change along with the cutting of naps.

My lo started off on 1 hour, then 45, and now we are on 30 min AM (i wake her), i too found that she was grumpy after being woken even after 1 hour, then the 45min too. But you might find the reason your lo is waking up grumpy is because after such a long first A time (after wake up) and then putting her down for a 55 min nap she may be a little tiny bit OT, and waking up grumpy. I would start off by reducing her first A time from wake up say back it off to about 3 hours 15, and the next A time after a 55 min nap might be about 3 hours depends on your lo. YOu will have to experiment a little. Then the last A time might be about 3 hours 15, just watch her cues as you dont want her getting OT, but at the same time you dont want her going to bed UT.

do you get any EW or NW?

i found that when i started on the 2-1 the first A was 3 hour 30 then put her down for 1 hour nap, and then second A time was about 3 hour 20, and i found that she was grumpy after a 1 hour nap becuase before she went down for that nap the A time was too long. Remember this nap is only to get them through until there bigger NAP in the PM.

What is her routine like?

kirsten

Thanks Kirsten for your help.  I think you're right, this morning I reduced her A time to 3 hours 15.  She does 3 hours 15 -30 usually, with the occasional 3 hours 45 A time.  Usually we get two 1.5 hour naps but sometimes they're shorter.  We do get NW and EW, every night and morning.  Lately she's seemed so tired... it doesn't help that we spent an hour an a half doing PD last night when she had her 2nd NW.  Usually I'd feed her but I'm trying not to.

So, because she's so tired I've been reluctant to cut her morning nap.  Just seems like it will set her up for a tough, cranky day you know?  Then, if I have to, I wake her up early from her 2nd nap so that she'll go to bed at a decent hour.  It's not ideal, but I'm thinking I should first tackle weaning her NW feeds so that she's waking up more rested in the morning.  THEN start working on a proper 2-1 routine.  Does that make sense?

Thanks again...
