Milk amounts at 6wks
« on: July 08, 2010, 15:50:55 pm »
Hi

I am mixed feeding my DS and he has bottles around 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm and 6pm. He is then bf at 7pm and the night wakes around 1/2am and 4/5am.

I have read on the FAQ that amount wise should be 3-4oz a feed. I generally make up 5oz and sometimes he does that that amount.

He is gaining weight well, no concerns there, but would like to understand what your LOs take in a feed. Wondering because in the late afternoon and evening, he doesn't feed so well ... just when I want to tank him up!!!

For example today he's had..

7.40am 2.5oz (was bf at 5am)
10.10am 4.5oz
1.30pm 4.5oz
4.30pm 2.5oz

He just wont entertain putting the teat back in his mouth!

Yesterday he took 1oz at 2.30pm, 3oz at 4.30pm and then 3oz at 6.30pm.

Thanks

x

My two never took the same amount at a feed, but probably were at around 4oz at 6 weeks. I think it's best to look at the intake over 24 hours but obviously you won't know how much he takes at a BF! I think refluxers tend to have "tricky" times of day too - my two didn't like to feed in the mornings and took better feeds from mid afternoon onwards.

If he is gaining weight, has plenty of wet and dirty nappies I don't think you have anything to worry about. My DD has been on the 91st centile since just after birth and averaged 25oz until she started solids - what she was growing on some days I really couldn't tell you ::)

Thanks Laura

I am not sure what percentile he is on - must check that!
I think he was 50th at birth but for 8lbs I thought he'd be higher than that!

He's gained 3lbs 7oz since then so about an avg of 9oz a week which I think sounds good to me.

He took another 2.5oz at 6pm and then a quick bf at 7pm. He went down like a light so fingers crossed - last time he did that he slept til 5am....here's hoping!

Fingers crossed! ~~~STAY ASLEEP VIBES!~~~

My DS was 8lb born and on the 50th centile! He went up to the 75th for a while but with uncontrolled reflux started sliding down slowly but surely and he's now around the 9th. DD was 8lb 11oz at birth and 75th I think - as I said, she's been on the 91st since just after birth - she was gaining a steady 8/9oz a week too! I think there is only about 5lbs weight difference between them now - I have a real little and large ;D

He's definitely growing. I only used bottles with DD at 6mths so used to a lot larger quantities so 2.5oz seems so little! You forget how small their bellies are!

Had such a good day here today so whatever happens tonight, who cares!!!!
