Face down sleeper
« on: June 20, 2010, 13:49:45 pm »
Ds just turned 10 months and he is freaking me out- he now sleeps with his face down in the mattress, and his body is curled up and he is on his knees. I am forever going to his crib and turning his head to the side but it does cause him to stir or wake, and then he goes face down again.

He used to sleep flat on his back with all limbs spread out. When his reflux was bad (before we got meds that worked) he used to sleep curled in a ball on his side. Think this position has anything to do with reflux or is it just an oddly comfy position for him? He doesn't fuss at all when we put him down, he's a great napper and sleeper. He is not crawling yet, so I even wonder if this is his "practice" position, as he's often on all 4's like this during play time.

Should I be concerned about the face down? We don't have regular bumper pads- we have the mesh breathable one that just keeps his limbs from sticking out between the bars and he doesn't have a pillow or toys in his crib.

Could just be a comfort thing, that is how I slept as a baby/kid and now that is how my girls sleep. They both have pillows, toys, comforters and I have honestly never worried about it.

That's how my son sleeps as well, at first it used to really freak me out as I thought that he might not be able to breath, but I've kept an eye on him and saw that whenever he slept like that he would change his position if he found it difficult to breath and now when I think of it he hasn't slept like that for a while now. So maybe your LO might grow out of it.

That's how mine slept by about ten months, too. As long as they are able to roll from front to back then they are fine - that is what I was always told! BUT we did also have an Angel monitor so I was not as worried.

I had a little one that did that too at times. She would eventually turn her head, but started out sleeping face down from the time she could roll to her belly (about 4 months). It used to freak me out, but there wasn't much I could do about it.

My 4.5 month old does it too sometimes. I try to turn her head but it never works. It scares me too, but I don't know what to do about it. She won't sleep on her back at all...

Well  I have to say I don't feel as worried knowing that other los do the same thing.

Tonight was odd, he wanted to sleep sitting up ::). Yep, my little Graydon kept sitting up in bed to do what I call his mantra hum (which puts him to sleep). I went in a few times to make him lay flat and his hum just got louder as he was irritated about being made to lay down! Finally just let him sit up, thinking he'd lay down when tired but nope, he leaned far forward to put his head down on his knees to sleep ::) ::). Dh went in and rolled him over, which woke him and got him fussing. So dh then sat him up again and he immediately put his head to his knees and fell asleep again, all happy. We did wait until he was in a heavy sleep and laid him down again.

M started to sleep face down when she could choose - I always put her down on her back (still do!), but she would always roll over (still does!).  I figured that if she was mobile enough to get into a position that she liked, she was in control and it wasn't unsafe.  She has also sometimes ended up in some really bizarre positions - and I have always just left her to it.  G will move if he's uncomfortable!

Sorry - nothing to add about your LO's sleeping position (except that it sounds like it's fine) but just thought this was so funny.  You gotta love them, haven't you?!!!
