Do u feed little one with milk in the sippy cup aft 6mths?
« on: June 27, 2010, 07:50:37 am »
I tried when he was 6.5 mths. He does drink from it but guess the teat hole is small he takes a long time to finish 180ml. Now I m back to bottle coz some said it's not good to use sippy to feed milk. Any comments?

Hi! I don't like to give 'advice' as what I do may not necessarily be the 'right' way but always happy to share my experience! :)

My DS is now 13 months. We've given water in a sippy from about 5 months I think, it took a while for him to actually drink from it, and then a little while longer for him to feed himself from it. He has water with his meals in his sippy (and throughout the day if/when he needs it), but we still give milk in bottles.

I may transfer to a sippy for his morning milk soon, not sure yet. But, in my opinion, your LO should still be given milk in bottles, it's a comfort thing more than anything I think.

We are similar to Cath - used a sippy for water from around 5 months but milk was still in bottles. I think most formula cans state that bottle feeding should be discouraged from 6 months because of their teeth coming in but to be honest I don't think many mums do. From around a year is when most people start making the switch because milk isn't a meal then, it's a drink.

When my DD turned a year we gave her afternoon milk in a sippy and she doesn't take very much but she still has some milk in a bottle after breakfast and for bed so it isn't a problem. With the bedtime bottle we make sure her teeth are cleaned straight after she drinks.

I think it's fine to carry on with bottles for a while longer yet, but if your LO is drinking milk from a sippy there would be no harm in continuing with maybe some day time feeds as it would make the transition easier when you get to a year. I think the only problem that comes to mind with feeding milk from a sippy is that the ones with valves are difficult to clean and some may not be suitable for sterilising so there is potentially a health risk from bacteria. We use a free flow sippy that can be sterilised!
