5 mo old NWs around 4 am without crying
« on: July 07, 2010, 07:22:02 am »
Hi, all.

My daughter is 5 mo.  I started EASY from her 6w, and everything went quite well, just like the book says.  But recently, she wakes up around 4 am, but no crying at all.  And she won't sleep again unless I feed her(breastfeed).  Now she takes 200ml each feed(breastmilk or formula) and 5 times per day(include dreamfeed) and has no solid food intake.

I'm quite confused whether the NWs means HUNGER?  Shoud I introduce her solid food?  Or other problems may occur?(I don't think she is teething now)

My daughter's routine:

E-7:00 am
S-9:00 am

E-11:00 am
S-1:00 pm

E-3:00 pm
S-5:15pm to 6:00 pm

E-7:00 pm
S-7:30 pm

Dream feed-11:00 pm

I had exactly the same situation with my 5mo DS last week, so would like to follow along.

I found that by decreasing the first nap to 1.5h, and then leaving him if he woke up at 4/5am (unless he started crying), he would go back to sleep. The last 3/4 nights he has not woken up till after 6 (we start the day at 6.30).

I have also been working on increasing his A time - 2h in the morning (he can't seem to do more ATM), 2.15 after 1st nap, 2h after 2nd nap and then 1.5h before bed. This seems to be doing the trick - although today the 45m monster seems to have made a come-back!!! Eeeek - after I spent nearly 4 weeks getting rid of it doing HTTH and W2S.  :(

Have you tried just leaving her when she has EW's?

Maybe I should improve the daytime routine as my DD is growing who could stand a longer "A" period.

Usually I give my DD her pacifier when she wakes up in early morning(before 6 am).  And she would sleep again immediately till 7 am.  But recently she's getting excited after I give her pacifier.   I doubt giving pacifier interruptes her sleep???  Or she's really HUNGERY?

I was also feeding when DS woke up as then he went straight to sleep again (but not every time!). As the wakings continued, even though I increased day time feeds, I decided that I was probably just reinforcing the EW's by feeding him. I also found that going into his room reinforced the wakings. I think as long as your DD is not crying when she is awake, leave her and see if she does go back to sleep on her own. My DS would wake up, chat away and move around the cot for between 10 and 20 minutes before falling asleep again.

Tweaking the A time is a good idea as well - I would start with just 5 minutes for the first A time and see how that goes before stretching the other A times.

By the way, re the morning nap - I read another post about how the first nap is a restorative nap and babies make up for those EW's with a nice long sleep. That's why I decided to cut that nap short.

I forgot to mention last time as well that I moved his bed-time 15 minutes earlier as he was getting really grouchy during bath and tending to fall asleep during his BT bottle.

Let me know what you think.

It's a great IDEA that just leaving the baby alone if he/she wakes up without crying!  I tried that last night.  My DD was chating away and looking around and then slept by herself after 10 or 20 minutes without feeding.  So I think my DD's NWs is nothing about hunger.  I might be too anxious to the NW's before.

As for daytime rountine, my DD has her own living clock.  Her first nap is about 1.5 hours(starts from 9am or 9:30am), second is 2hours.

Anyway, thanks so much for the advice!

Great news! They really do keep us on our toes, don't they?

Hope it continues to go well with your daughter.
