Solids affecting formula intake 6.5 mo.?
« on: July 27, 2010, 17:41:29 pm »
hi all..

My DS is 6.5 months, but we have solids firmly established (started at 5 months) and he is working on dropping the CN. I had been posting on the 4-6 month board but not really at that stage anymore.

Im wondering how much solid I should offer. I feed solid about 1.15H after bottle feed - and he eats about 3 tbsps of fruit/veg - (about 2 tbsp veg 1 fruit)then at the next bottle feed he hasnt been finishing the bottle.. (drinks ~6 0z) starting in the AM - I am concerned that maybe solids interfereing with bottle and maybe I should offer less? I let him eat what he wants, sometimes he easts all and Ill give another tsp, other times he stops openign his mouth so we are finished.
I also let him have a sippy with water at solids, but he doesnt really drink much, lots just come out onto the bib - he might get less than 1/2 oz water at most

EASY
wake /eat 0645
solid 0800
sleep 0915
E 11:00
solid 1215
sleep 1330
E 1500
solid 1630
CN (sometimes) at 1730 for 10 min
Bottle/bed at 18:30
DF at 22:30

This is all give or take 15 mins
Thanks!!

Milk is definitely the most important source of nutrition at this age :)  How much has his milk intake been decreasing?  And have you counted any milk that you've added to his solids towards his total milk intake for the day?  Have you tried limiting his solids?  Does it make a difference?

TBH, I would try cutting back on the solids a bit and see if his milk intake goes back up.  Maybe offer 2tbsp instead of 3 for a few days and see if that makes a difference?

hth :)

hey

Well.. its seems that my DS is cutting his first tooth.. So I was wondering if that would affect hpw much he wants to eat..?
Ill give it a few days and see. I will also decrease solids. Ill check back in a few

FYi the amount was he wasnt drinking was maybe 1/2 oz per bottle on average.. sometimes it was 2, then the next was less than 1/2 oz left, then other times he drianed it..

Today it was 2 oz in the afternoon of a 7-8 oz bottle

Teething can definitely impact feeding - breast, bottle, and even solids.  The sucking action can cause pain, and the nipples on bottles especially are harder and can put pressure on the gums making them uncomfortable.  Have you tried offering pain meds before a feed?  (about 1/2 an hour to allow them time to kick in) Or orajel on the gums?

Leaving 1/2oz in the bottle on average really isn't bad at all.  Today, when it was 2oz in the afternoon, had he had solids shortly before?  Might that have impacted his feed?

Vikki

I had given him same pain meds later yesterday afternoon.. I wil keep an eye out and see. Also I am going to give solids after 1 hour of bottle instead of 1. 15 - maybe this will help in 2 ways a) he wont eat as much solids and b) then he hasnt had his solids quite as close to the next bottle time.

Yesterday was a little messed up for us because we did a photo shoot , so he was a little distracted.

I will pick up some baby oragel today - I would rather use that then pain meds anyway I think.

Thanks!!
