Starting solids vd dirty nappies?
« on: August 07, 2010, 20:03:20 pm »
My LO is almost 5 months, I've started introducing baby rice a week ago, which has been going really well - not helping the NW yet  :(
But since yesterday she has 5 or more dirty nappies... it use to be one a day even skipping a day or 2. She's  been exclusively BF since now. Could her diet be the cause of the nappies, not sure if it's teething as other signs comes and goes.

Any ideas?

This is completely normal. She has probably been absorbing most of the BM because it is so perfect for her. Solids foods have lots in that she won't absorb and will need to get rid of. The poops will get more and more adult-like in texture and appearence.  Expect lots more dirty nappies in the months (and years) to come. Although hopefully it will settle down to 1 or 2 a day as hef digestive system matures enough to digest it all more, especially as she is still very young. The change really is a shock for the mama of an EBF baby though isn't it? I found myself wondering where did those sweet smelling yellow poops go? LOL.
Just keep a look out for any blood or green/runny poops as that can mean allergy or illness. Or if you are still concerned maybe mention it to her dr.

Thank you Cadie's mum, I guess it all makes sense. I haven't been to concerned as she is still a happy baby and it doesn't seems to worry her jus one bit :)

DS cried when he did his first few poops after solids. I guess it just feels different to the explosive liquid ones. LOL.

Getting a bit worried as for the first time in her life she's got nappy rash, she still looks healthy - but think her bottom might be a bit tender. :(
Could it be to early for her to have solids, I've only been giving baby porridge and baby rice.

If you are worried I would talk to you LO's doctor.  Rashes can be a sign of a sensitivity.  The only thing that strikes me as odd is that rice is usually constipating, not the opposite, so I do think there could be something going on.  Try not to get too worried - it's very normal for their bottoms to get irritated with new foods - but something to keep an eye on.  I would stop the solids for a few days and see if it clears up.  :)

Might be too early. Did you check with your dr before introducing them early?
I think nappy rash is more common once LOs are on solids as the ph of the poop is different and has more irritants in especially if it is passing through only partially digested.
Is it green? That could mean she has a virus. I agree with Martina Rae, check with the dr if you are worried.
When DS started solids at 6mo he got a sore bottom and I got some cream from the dr, I think it was called Metformin...? It was great, much more heavy duty than sudocrem we normally use.
