Way too much formula?
« on: August 06, 2010, 22:35:09 pm »
My dd#3 is 4 weeks old.  She eats 4 oz. every 3 hours(and sometimes that's hard) except once in the evening she can only make it 2 hours.  She then does a stretch at night where she goes about 5-6 hours.  However, if I add all of that up it's about 28 oz.  If I multiply her weight (I'm assuming 9 lbs. as she was 7 lbs. 7oz. at birth) it should be more on the lines of 23-25. I'm worried 4 oz. isn't enough anymore.  I thought this was a growth spurt, but it's been over a week!  Thanks for the input.  Youl would think after 3 I would have this mastered!  :)

The advice I was always given was to feed to appetite. I'm pretty sure my two were both taking 4oz feeds at that age, sounds pretty normal to me! I wouldn't worry too much about working out the amount of oz - that is a really rough guide and every baby is different. If she is keeping her feeds down and has the appropriate wet and dirty nappies she is taking what she needs. Don't forget if she is draining feeds you need to increase the bottles so there is enough for her to stop because she is full not because the bottle is empty.

I think the first few weeks are a permanent growth spurt!

HTH!

Thanks!  That is exactly what I have been doing.  It just seems like a lot when I add it all up!  She is happy though!
