7 mo solids & gaging?
« on: August 10, 2010, 18:05:49 pm »
Hi everyone!  I have a 7 mo who has been on solids since about 5 mo or so per pedi.  At our 6 month drs appt. The pedi gave me the go ahead within the next month, which would be now, to begin introcing LO to some smashed/soft lumpy foods.  The few times that I have tried LO has gaged & then once actually threw it all up!  Then at times will just keep coughing.  Is this normal?  Should I wait a little longer to try again or should I just keep trying until LO gets "use" to the new texture?  Thank You!!!

Keep trying, this is totally normal. Gagging is actually a good thing - it means your baby is preventing himself from choking! The gagging will decrease as he gets better at chewing and learning to move his food around his mouth. If he gags, don't act alarmed or anxious or he may start to think there is something to fear - even if he throws up, you can just clear up calmly and carry on with the meal!

Our son did the same thing. I was just blending his foods but then I blended and strained the purees and he liked it much better. We're moving onto a chunkier consistency now and there is must better acceptance of them. I know there's a lot of discussion on the baby led weaning threads that might help.

Yes, it is normal. My LO gagged and projectile coughed her first mashed potato...straight onto DH's chest (right before work too, so he had to go change)! It took her about 3 weeks to really get good at managing the soft foods.

Well, I'm glad to hear it's normal!  LOL!  I tried smashing a banana for LO's first & that is what she threw up!  I of course freaked out!  I will keep trying I guess.  It's just very unsettling to see LO gag & such!  Thanks ladies!

My dd gagged too...alot.  I wondered if it had to do with her reflux...but anyway, I backed off on the texture, went back to smoother things but with a grainier texture, no chunks.  TBH, my dd HATED the stage 3 foods with the chunks, but yet would eat and chew table food. When I asked SIL about it, she said her kids hated the stage 3 also, and that she went from stage 2 to table foods.  Have you given her the safe feeder? At that age my dd LOVED the safe feeder with watermelon in it, or cantelope or apple chunks...do you have one of those? I think it helped my dd alot, both with new tastes and to use her mouth!

Both mine have had their moments gagging and throwing up - DS was much worse than DD. Banana was one of the worst things for both of them - I think it's to do with the way it gets sort of slimey! They only really got on with banana when they could hold it and eat it by themselves.

It does pass as they learn to manipulate the food around their mouths!

Well, tonight for dinner I cooked up some carrots & mashed them up.  They were pretty mushy.  Gave her the tiniest bit....gaged & kept spitting up....but it was all clear stuff coming out???  It freaks me out so much!!!  I then mixed it with some pureed carrots....she did the same thing.  So I just continued with pureed only.  I did try Stage 3 apple/bannana with rice cereal....she HATED that too.  I have a jar of lasagna & green beans with rice cereal.....we'll see how she does.  I have even given her the littliest piece of bread...and I mean....like a crumb!  She gags & coughs!  However, I give her a carrot stick to "chew" on & she loves it!  Weird!  I do have the safe food eater....I have put several things in it...even frozen for her teething.....she doesn't like it!  I hope things get easier!!  Thanks ladies!

Alot of kids hate the stage 3...that in and of itself (imo) is not a big deal.  She is still really little...just keep offering.  Can she pick up things with 2 fingers? My dd (who gagged on alot of things) liked elbow macaroni, plain, just a few on her tray and she would be so happy! Rice crispies she liked too.  But you'll see big changes in the coming weeks and months...what my dd gagged on at 7 months she was gobbling up at 10 months, kwim?  Try watermelon in the feeder.....yum!

Also...my dd didn't like anything frozen either...just cold!   :)

Does she take the Stage 2 stuff? She's still really little for stage 3. We never really did stage 3 - did stage 2, then added finger foods, and then table foods mashed up with a fork.

Yes, she has been taking the stage 2 for a while now.  She does great with it.  She even does great with anything thick too.  I guess I just have to keep offering until she gets use to it.  Thanks again!

I wouldn't worry too much, it sounds like she is doing great! Maybe she needs a few more weeks til she is ready for it.
