20 month old refusing naps. Is he done with the naps?
« on: August 10, 2010, 12:41:12 pm »
Hi ladies I can use your help. My DS is 20 months old and doesn’t want to take naps.what should I do? Utill 2 weeks ago he was taking 2/2.30h naps , but now nothing. His routine is
7.30/8 wake up
13.30-3.30 nap
7.30/8 bed time
He’s been on one nap since he was 10 moths. So what do you think? I can see that he’s tired rubbing his eyes but he keeps talking in his bed.help me please :'(

i think he is too young to be dropping his nap already.i think you need to increase his A time.id try pushing his A time up to 5.5hrs instead of the 5hrs and see how you go.

lucy gave you some great advice, looks like maybe a nap closer to 2pm would help here.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll try to put him in bed at 13.30 and give him 30m to fall asleep. Do you think I should move his bed time to 8.30?

no, i wouldn't push his bedtime out yet.  let's see how he does with later nap time first.  you dont' want to end up with OT

Ok ladies so moving his nap time didn’t really work today. He looked tired around 13 and I put him down for his nap at 13.30 but he’s still not sleeping and it's already 15 o'clock!!

That sounds like you missed his window.  Maybe 13:00 would have been better!

It seems like 30 mins to fall asleep is a long time for a nap.  Normally they are off in minutes.  I think the opposite, since you had him doing 13:30 in your routine above, before have you tried 14:00?  Is he always doing 12 hours at night?  Was anything different the day he seemed tired at 13:00?

He usually does between 11.30/12h at night, and was doing around 2/2.30h naps. Most of our mornings are the same , we go to the park and play for 2 h then at 12 we have lunch and at 13 I put him for his nap.it usually takes him a between 15/20m to settle for his nap ,so by 13.30 he’s asleep. At least that’s how it was up until 2 weeks ago.now sometimes he doesn’t fall asleep till 15 and then I have to wake him up. Today he didn’t fall asleep at all.i even increased his time in the park to 2.30h because I thought that maybe he isn’t tired enough and that’s why he doesn’t want to take a nap. So what am I doing wrong here?!

i think you are putting him down too early.i would have tried 1.50 to be asleep for 2pm like we said in the previous posts.Does it always take him so long to fall asleep?Did you put him down at 1.30 hoping for him to be asleep for 2pm?,or did you go foe 1.30 cos he was tired?

Yes it usually takes him around 20m to fall asleep.i put him down at 13.30 hoping that by 2 he’ll be asleep. I can try to put him down at 13.50 and see how that goes. should I try it tomorrow  or do again the 13.30, because he didn’t have a nap today?

Me too, I'd base it off his night rather than the nap.  It's his A time that's the issue, he needs more to be tired enough to go down for his nap at a decent time.  You could extend your time at the park, give him a bigger snack and then push lunch a tad later and then short wind down at 1:45/1:50 to be asleep by 2.  The only issue is that you may have to cap the nap at this point, so bedtime isn't too late.  But one step at a time :-)
