How often should EBF babies be pooing?
« on: August 16, 2010, 05:28:26 am »
My 6 wks old DS is EBF and since the last 2 wks he has been pooing every other day, then since last wk every 2 days. Is that normal for an EBF baby? When he does poo, he poos around 2 - 3 times and A LOT.
TIA xXx

EBF babies can poop at totally random times from a few times a day to up to a week between poops! Its all normal, and will morph a lot between now and when you wean.

Enjoy your little bundle!

Thanks for the reply lilisuze. Its good to know that it's normal as I was getting a bit worried as I read that breastfed babies poo everyday. Thankfully he's pooed :).

Thanks for ur reply. Wooow 7 days between poo. The problem with my LO is if he doesn't poo because he's colicky it really bothers him and he gets very fussy and grumpy.

Hi there,

Just read your post and had to add my experience.

Both of my babies were EBF and would go quite a while between poops. I contacted the BF clinic when my daughter went over 14 days without pooing. The nurse told me that EBF cannot get constipated. They are very efficient at metabolizing the breast milk and 'using it all up', so to speak. So no need to be concerned about how lo g between poops when you're EBF. It's when you start to introduce solids that you have to worry more about how long between poos and constipation.

Hope this helps some :).

Thanks for ur reply mommy2cait. That does make a lot of sense about them using the breastmilk all up so that they can never get constipated. That's very reassuring.
