Link b/w catnap and NW/EW?
« on: September 24, 2010, 23:13:46 pm »
Hi everyone,

I've herd there's a link between the late catnap (with 2 longer naps for a 6mo) and EW in particular. Can someone tell me a bit more about it and help me through this NW/EW situation we're having?

DS is nearly 6mo and has been EW between 5 and 5:30am for a while, can go back to sleep with some assistance...usually. Yesterday we pushed his 2 long naps out a bit and removed the catnap, and did early bedtime. This morning he woke at 4am and resettled a few times until he finally went back to sleep at 5:15am when DH put him onhis tummy. He then slept til I woke him to feed at 7am.

Should we continue with no catnap? I know he will drop it about this age. I just don't want to disturb his nights more and 4am is the earliest EW we've ever had (actually I'd call it a NW as he did go back to sleep).

Any help out there?

:) Thanks

Hi there, can you post the routine for us.  LO is not ready to drop the CN until they can handle 3 hrs A time consistently.  You are doing the right thing in resettling him back down, treat it as a NW.  But let's see if the routine needs tweaking.

Hi and thanks for your reply :)

Our EASY was:

anything before 7am resettle
E 7am
E solids 8:30am
S 9:30-11am when I woke to feed to preserve nap 2 and catnap

E 11am
E solids 12:30pm
S 1:30pm- 3pm when I woke to preserve catnap

E3pm
S 4:45-5:15pm
E solids 5:30
E 6:40

DF 10:15

The past 3 days we've pushed A time out and dropped the catnap. We are doing early bed to compensate as well. He has cried out in the night at 3/4am a few times but resettled himself, and then DH will turn him on his tummy which is his fave position if he won't settle, then he's gone back to sleep until 6:30/7am.

So it's looked like
W 6:30/7am
E 7am
E olids 8:30am
S 9:50/10:am-11:40ish

E when wakes, 11:45ish
E solids 1:15
S 2:30/2:45-somewhere b/w 3:30 and 4pm(he's doing a shorter one here where I used to wake him after 1.5h...not sure why)

E on waking at 3:45/4:00
E solids 5:30pm
bath
E early for early bed...in bed b/w 6:30/6:45pm

DF 10:15

So better in terms of EW...he's NW now but resettling pretty much, and needs less help if DH puts him on tummy. No dummy, he's a thumb sucker. Am I doing the right thing by dropping catnap?
Thanks :)

Anyone with any help to give?

Today hasn't been great...since weaning the swaddle and finding his thumb DS2 has resettled in most naps and they have consistently been over an hour...but this arvo was just 40mins. Makes me feel like I wasted my time holding him off for that extra 15 mins before nap.

EW and unsettled but sleeping on/off from 5-6:15am
S 6:15-7am (I woke to feed)

E 7am
E solids 8:45am
S 10-11:30

E 11:30
E solids 1pm (seemed very hungry)
S 2:20-3:00 :( :( :( tried to resettle him, again seemed hungry but fed very sleepily as if he wanted to still be asleep

E 3:15
And that's where we are now...so I guess today is a catnap day...well, the rest of nap 2, anyway. Sigh...I'm ready for some consistency...and no more EWs!!

Anyone?

take a look at my thread on the naps board dealing with the same issue and also Bakershakers thread on EASY board.  I'll try to post some links later, GTG.

Hi there, it's hard to drop the CN.  Most LO aren't ready until they are doing 3 hrs consistently for A time.  And even then you can get OT, it's just part of a nap transition.  Any chance he's hit his 6 mths growth spurt and is hungrier in the night/at the EW?  GS makes them more hungry and more tired usually.  But sometimes it makes them physically tired rather than mentally tired IYSWIM.  Their body wants sleep by their mind is too alert and on the go.
