introducing a duvet...
« on: October 09, 2010, 12:31:18 pm »
DS has always used gro-bags and tbh I love them but I would imagine that in the next 6 months we will be transferring him to a BBB and thought it might be worth getting him used to a duvet before then. Also, it gets v cold in our house over the winter.
Just wanted to read others experiences really. I doubt it will stay on him so do you have to put on many more layers?
I am worried about him trying to climb out of bed once the gro-bag is gone. I even love zipping him in when we do wind down as he immediately knows it is time to stop racing about and he cannot move too much :)

We gave T a duvet when we moved him to a BBB and I was surprised at how well he took to all of it.  He doesn't climb out of bed, and he pulls the covers over him and sleeps that way like a big boy.  I never have to go in and re-cover him.  Sometimes they surprise you!  ;)

wow Martina - how lovely! I think he would like one as he climbs on our bed and gets in under the duvet and then says 'cosy'
If a digger duvet can't win him over nothing can ;)

Good plan, get him one he likes!  ;)  I hope he takes to it.  T also likes to crawl under blankets with us so I think that's why he enjoys having his own so much.  At bedtime he crawls into bed and pulls it over himself.  It's so cute, but reminds me of how grown up he is getting!  *sniff*  ;)

Not trying to hijack, just wondering at what age you moved Tristan into a BBB, Martina?

Jenn, my plan was not to move him for as long as possible!  :P  Then when he was teething his 2yr molars we got some bedtime resistance, and being too tired to deal with it we just took his mattress out and let him sleep on the floor, which he liked (about 23mos).  Did that for a few weeks to get a feel for how he did, then converted his toddler bed.  Around 24mos my dad bought him a BBB and he's been in it ever since.  We made a big deal of going to pick up the bed and pick out his sheets and comforter (TBH, I don't think T really cared, he just wanted to run around the store!)  He does great in his bed.  We were having some bedtime issues for awhile, but they weren't directly related to the bed, so once we worked through them he started going to sleep in there like a charm.  He almost never gets out, even when he wakes he calls for us to come get him!  I'm waiting for the day when he tries to get out of the room.    ::)  I consider ourselves lucky that he made the transition with no problems, I always figured that once T was in a bed he's always get out, but he doesn't.  Yet.  ;)

Cool! Thanks Martina! Ethan just loves crawling under the blankets of the mats on the floor that I use for my day home kids so I was thinking about doing thatfor him but I think I would like to wait until he is sleeping a bit better! Thanks!

Jacob sleeps half in and half out really, but he does cover himself if he gets cold. I think he will need warm socks etc in the deep of winter.

He is still in a cot - but he slept on a floor mattress on holiday and he got straight out after the first morning. Nothing beats a spirited toddler!!

I moved DD to a BGB about 6 weeks ago (well took the sides off her cot  :P)  She has always used gro-bags, I love them!!  So I was worried about her getting cold.  I used a normal single duvet and put it sideways in her cot bed so that half of it is right under the mattress and I can tuck her in well.  I started doing it a week or so before removing one side of the cot to see how she managed without the gro-bag.  I found the cot quilts too small to be able to tuck in properly.  For the first week or so she would wriggle out the covers and I had to go in and recover her when I was up at the loo (couple of times a night  ::) but now she pulls the covers over her when she gets cold  ;D.  I actually find it adorable to watch her cover herself like a big girl.

We found the transition to BGB eventually quite easy with only 3 days of EW's.  We did try a couple of months before a few times and it just did not work (NWs and EWs for a week so I gave up) so I think it depends when they are ready.

Good luck  ;D X

Thanks. I don't think he needs to have a BBB yet but I would like to give him a duvet at some point so he is used to it. x

My boys usually kick off their covers, so in the cold weather they wear fleece sleepsuits.

we have always used a duvet - right from birth over top of a lighter weight grow bag (winter is cold here and we have always let the house cool off in the night so it can get downright cold in here).

why not try him with a lighter weight pj and his summer grow bag with duvet over top?  that way you will get him used to it but he won't freeze if it comes off?  we also tucked the duvets in under the mattress on end and one side so they can only kick it off so far iyswim?   dd kicks hers off but doesn't put it back on, ds kicks his off but then can pull it back up.  he's been able to do that from about 18 months.

Same here Becky. I have kept the cot for now. I think he needs it as much as I do. He is happy there - when we went to Norfolk he slept on a toddler airbed for a week and did fine BUT he did get out straight away and had short nights. He seemed really pleased to see his cot when he got home as well :). I will keep it until he wants it to go, I think.

Cherie - that is what I was thinking - a fleece sleepsuit and the duvet. I only use a 4 tog one anyway.

Just keep the bag and fling it in there and see what he does Becky - if he is covering up and likes it then just ditch the bag. I must say J doesn't climb or mess about anymore with it off either TBH.
