1 year old - Early wakings.... 5am (exhasuted by 6.30am)!! help
« on: October 22, 2010, 09:02:57 am »
Please can someone advise me on what to do.

My 1 year old has never been a great sleeper and still wakes sometimes during the night, although not all the time, and I can generally get him back to sleep within 20 mins. It's the early wakings that are exhausting me. 5/5.15 am he first cries out. I leave him for 15 mins and he babbles to himself but by about 5.20/30 he is shouting for me.
I've tried to put him back down, but he really fights it and gets very cross.
I give him milk at 6 but by about 6.30 he's exhausted. I don't put him back down normally until 8.30/9am by which time he's besides himself and sometimes just curls up on the carpet and tries to go to sleep.
This moning he gave in at 8 and by 8.15 he was back in bed. I'm very aware I should be looking to reduce his day time naps (my other little boy about this time dropped his down to one nap) but I can't see how I can get him past 9am.
I'll post his routine below, any ideas about how to extend this would be gratefully recieved...

5am wake up
6am bottle (5/6oz)
7am brekkie
8.30-9am sleep for 1.5-2 hours
10-10.30 wake up
12 lunch
1.15-1.30 sleep for 1.5 hours
2.30-3 wake up
5 tea
6 bath
7 bed

He's super active, has been walking since 10 months. But when he's tired gets very agressive, so I can read the signs very well.
Pleae could someone tell me where I'm going wrong.
Thanks xx

Hi,
I think the morning nap is probably not helping with this as he is waking early knowing that a couple of hours later he will get a lovely long nap. What I would do is shorten the morning nap and then shorten the second A time after which he can have a long nap. So maybe a  bit like this...
A - 5am
S - 8.30-9.15am
S - 12.15 - 2.15pm
Bedtime - 6.30pm ish.
It is still a long day but hopefully once that am nap gets cut a bit he will sleep a little later. I think it is def worth a try.
You will need to play around with the second A a little. 3 hours is a guide, you may find he needs a little less or a little more in order to sleep well.
What do you think?

The only other thing to ask is is he teething? My lo always wakes early when his teeth are bothering him.

Thank you so much. I shall definietly try that. I don't think he's teething at the moment, and this EW isn't on and off, it's been this way for months and months, every day.
I'll try to extend the morning waking and shorten his sleep.
Fingers crossed!
