Waking up mid-nap
« on: October 14, 2010, 13:00:24 pm »
My boy, 20mths, for no reason has begun to wake up halfway through his nap.

He has been on 1 nap for about 2 months his schedule is this:

Wake 6.15-6.30
Sleep 12.30  (Typically 1.5 or 2 hours)
Bed 7-7.15

and about 10days ago he started waking up after 1 hour.  Not everyday, sometimes he'll sleep through but more often than not he wakes up after an hour, sometimes whining, sometimes chatting.  Initially I left him for a while to see if he will settle and eventually (20-30mins) he just starts calling "Muuuuummmmmyyy" until I go and get him.  If I hear him wake now, I go to him lie him down "Sleeping time" sh/pat for literally a second or 2, leave the room and I don't hear another thing for at least another hour!  He definately needs at least 1.5hours sleep, ideally 2, so I don't want to get him up when he wakes after an hour.  I'm not sure if it has become habit yet as there were 2 days on the trot but then he slept through it the next day.  But if it has what do I do?

When he was younger, maybe from around 10-14mths he went through phases where he used to wake mid nap and need resettled but not since then.

Anyone any ideas or suggestions?  There are no EW or NW, he still has loads of teeth to come but don't know if it's related to teeth.

Thanks  Vicki

Hi Vicki,

It definitely could be teeth.  You might try medicating a couple days before the nap to see if that helps at all.  The A time seems about right, if not even a little on the long side, so you could also try pulling back just a little, so the nap is more like 12 - 12:15 pm.  If he is getting teeth, sometimes that makes LOs more tired, so a bit earlier nap might help.

Other than that, I think you're doing the right thing, by going to him and having him fall back to sleep.  If all it takes, is you telling him to sleep still and that little bit of shh/pat, I don't think it is a habit.  It sounds more like teeth or developmental to me.  HTH!
