BF difficulties
« on: November 11, 2010, 16:08:39 pm »
Hey all,
My 2 mo little guy is on 3-hr easy, breastfed exclusively from day 1.  I'm beginning to notice there are a few times during the day (daily at the 7p time, but sometimes happens with other feeds as well), after 5 min. or so he'll start fighting me at the breast.  He doesn't want to latch on, even after burping him.  He'll cry start kicking his legs and clawing at me.  I know there is no way that he can possibly be done.  'I usually nurse him laying down on my side, but when he starts getting irritated, I've tried changing positions, and that will work for a few minutes, but then he'll start fussing again.  He's only spit up a handful of times to date, he's easy to burp and overall a content little guy.  But lately feeds have become more of a battle, and I don't know what to do!

I've noticed too that at the 3a feed, and occasionally at the 6:30 he'll go more than 5, less than 10 min - which seems waaaayyy too short, but he's not showing hunger signs early.

Thoughts?

I don't know.  The only symptom he seems to have is being combative at a few nursing sessions, and not nursing for very long.  But he is otherwise a happy baby, gaining weight steadily.

Hi there!

I will ask someone with more reflux knowledge than me to have a look at your post as it is a possibility. Do you notice a difference if you feed him in a more upright position?

The other thing that came to mind was teething. Some babies do start this early and that can be a cause of refusing to feed.

Another thing that can make babies frustrated at the breast is when mum's milk flow slows down which usually happens after a few months but since he won't even latch on I'm not sure it could be this :-\

Re the feeds not taking very long sometimes... that can be totally normal at this age. Some babies get very efficient. How long would a 'good' full feed from him usually be? To compare.

The evening often is the worst time for reflux but I think you would see it at other times as well.

How is your routine?? My LO fights at the breast if she is OT as she just can't really calm herself to feed.

Also are you still cluster feeding? If so then perhaps your LO isn't hungry.

Sometimes short night feeds are a sign of a sleepy LO who is moving towards dropping a feed.

hey toddandleah, the exact same thing happened to me and it was nothing, he does it now and again, turned out that some feeds were more snacks than full feeds (or he was getting a lot in a short period of time) and he just didnt want to feed any longer, he used to fight me a little when i'd try to put him back on. now some feeds are only 3 mins! i'd say your breasts are working super efficiently (assuming you did some bfing with your older ones) and he has totally got feeding down and is just more efficient and/or having some smaller feeds. this was totally the case with me!
