9 month old night wakings
« on: November 28, 2010, 08:06:06 am »
Our 9 month old has slept through the night 4 times since he was born, so this is not something new.  He's up anywhere from 1-4 times a night.  From a very early age he always put himself to sleep. We lay him in the crib and he's usually asleep within 15 mintues so he knows how to put himself to sleep, but at night it's like he forgets :)

His routine is roughly the following, timings vary a bit from day to day.
Wake 6am, bottle and then plays in crib
7 am change and breakfast (toaast, cereal, fruit)
8:30 am bottle
Play time
9:30am nap time
11 am bottle
12pm lunch
1:30 bottle
2:30 nap
4:30pm bottle
6pm dinner
7pm bedtime rountine of bath, cuddling and bottle and then leave him in the crib to sleep

We've tried keeping him in our bed, but that makes things worse he starts talking crawling around, climbing on us, playing, etc.  We tried to let him settle himself, but his cries get louder and eventually wake our 2 year old.  The only thing that works is a bottle to get him back to sleep.   We try just water in the bottle, sometimes that works, but other times he fusses for milk.  We give him 6 ounces of water with a tiny bit of formula powder and that's good enough to get him back to sleep.  So I don't hthink it's hunger and I find it odd because he donsn't need the bottle to fall asleep in the fist place.  Any  suggestions to help us get our sleep at night?

thanks!

Hi there, is his afternoon nap 2 hrs?  You may want to consider cutting that back to at least 1.5 hrs.  He may be in need of more A time at his age.  How mobile is he?  Is he cruising yet?  Sounds like my kid, really active and refuses to sleep in our bed lol  We tried.

The bottle in the night could actually be a prop so I would stick to another method to get him back to sleep...either PU/PD or shush/pat if he'll allow it.
The tweaking never stops!

Thanks Wendy.  You're right about being active, he can't sit still!  He's been cruising for a month now and crawling for 2 months.  We tried cutting him down to one nap a day but then he's really cranky and wants to go to bed by 6pm and still wakes up at night.

The only other thing I forgot to mention is that he has always been really gassy, so I am wondering is it gas?  Naps are shorter, but at night maybe the gas builds up since he's not moving around and the water soothes him?  He has always been on Enfamil Gentelease (since I stopped breastfeeding), if we swtich to Good Start or any other regular formula, he's sptting up and very uneasy, so he does have trouble digesting the formula - could that be causing him trouble at night?

Hi there, I would definitely keep him on 2 naps at this point, really by around 10 mths they need 1.5 naps...but since that's not possible, we recommend keeping one nap shorter than the other.  Here's a link that may help you very soon:

The formula certainly could be an issue.  Is there any evidence of milk protein intolerance or allergy?  You may try a hypoallergenic formula (like Nutramigen) to rule it out...but I would talk to your doc about it first.  Did/does he have any signs of reflux otherwise?
