10 MO crawling around in cot
« on: October 20, 2010, 05:36:27 am »
I always seem to be having trouble with Victoria's naps recently.

My problem at the moment is that she has started to roll over in bed and crawl around the cot during nap time, today after lunch I put her down for a sleep and she settled fine but is awake after 25 minutes crawling around the cot. Do I just leave her until she gets upset? This crawling around is also causing early wakings at the moment. She does go to bed at 6pm and sleeps all night so I don't mind her waking at 6am but 5am is a bit much.

Today's EASY so far is below

5am - wake up! (will not resettle, so I gave up by 6am)
6am BF
7am - breakfast  (almost asleep in high chair by 7.30am)
8am - sleep
10am - wake up and BF
12- lunch
1pm - sleep (was definitely tired but awake after 20 minutes, I can hear her laughing and crawling around)

Any ideas on how to fix this?

It depends on the temperament of your LO I think.  We'd a nightmare of a time when our DD learned to pull to standing.  For about 10 days I just left her to it but it was a disaster.  She is very spirited and just wasn't going to get up and down and then after a while decide she was going to go to sleep and ended up OS and OT.  After that time I started staying in the room.  I settled her for her nap and put a blanket tightly over her (towels inbetween mattress and cot rails!) and the minute she went to stand up I put my hand on her and said 'its time to sleep' and didn't let her get up.  After 2-3 days she realised the cot was for sleeping and I faded back out again.  I gave her lots and lots of practice through the day so she wasn't missing out on the practice.

It does depend though.  Others have great success with just leaving them to it and resettling when they get upset.   I think that would be hard with a 5am waking though as she's already had enough sleep to not need to go back over IYKWIM?  Maybe going in as soon as you hear her and saying 'its still night time' and lying her back down would help?

Thanks for this, I think your method might actually be more helpful becasue so far just leaving her hasent worked at all. I will give it a go.

Ok I'm in Australia so I just put her down for the first nap, she woke after 40 minutes and was crawling around so I went straight in and tucked her sheets in and put some gloves on her hands so she can't use the bars to pull herself and roll over. Guess what is worked! she is asleep again. Now I have a method hopefully if I just stick to it she will get the message.

Yay!!  Hope it continue to work!  Some LOs just need help winding down more when they hit developmental leaps!  Lots of practice during the day and hopefully novelty will wear off!!  Until she learns to stand!!

not so easy tonight, I had to pull up a chair beside the cot and keep laying her back down. She cried because she wanted to roll over again and I had to keep patting her to calm her down, when she got really worked up I pick her up for cuddles a couple of times then put her back down. Does that sound right? I hate it when she cries. She is asleep now anyway after 25 minutes of doing that.

I started doing the same thing as Shiv52 when my son started getting active in the cot recently.  He is in a sleeping bag and I tuck the bottom of the sleeping bag into the end of the cot and have 2 blankets tucked over him with blankets down the side of the cot so it's like a really firm tuck in.  He has always enjoyed sleeping on his back and our problem was more that he was rolling over to his tummy or sitting up and waking himself up.  He really seems to like to either sleep on his back or on his side so he still has enough room to move.  I gave it a week or so to see if he wanted to get comfy and move around the cot and find his own sleeping position but he didn't so I did this and he went back to sleeping properly again.

I would have intervened before my LO had a chance to even sit up, so the second she went to move I'd put my hand on her and say 'its sleepy time'.  If she got the chance to sit or stand she got even more upset when I tried to lie her back down.  Make sense?

Ok I think she got the message cot=sleep not crawling, she is back to taking 1-2 hour naps twice a day. I didn't even have to sit beside the cot this afternoon just had to go back in a couple of times and turn her and say sleep time. Thankyou for the tips.

My son has just started getting more active again in the cot so last night I removed all the blankets as he now seems to want to move around and curl up in different spots, but thankfully he can now get from front to back etc without my help, so fingers crossed he doesn't start to stand up in his cot!
