12 month old with some serious seperation anxiety
« on: October 27, 2010, 04:56:54 am »
My 12, month old boy has never really demonstrated any separation anxiety at bedtime until this week. It really seemed to appear suddenly. He will start to cry as soon as we approach the crib, and then scream when he is finally put in the crib. When we walk out of the room it's an even louder scream. We have tried everything that we can think of. We do not sneek out of the room. I know that doesn't help things. I'm sure there is probably more to it than just separation anxiety, but we're just not sure what's going on.

Any advice for separation anxiety/bedroom anxiety?

Can you also post your routine for us too?  Do you think there are teeth coming?

He most definitely does have teeth coming in. He has 4 new ones coming through. So I know in general he's not feeling good. I just wasn't sure if there is more to it than that though.

We don't have a real routine going, but due to him refusing to go to bed earlier (than 11:30 or later lately), he doesn't wake up until around 8 or 9. Then he has breakfast (usually oatmeal with a fruit), then play, he's been extra super fussy/needy lately at playtime. Usually I'll keep him up for 3 hours, then nap, if he'll nap. He won't sleep by himself, especially right now, so I have to assist (by bouncing him in my arms to sleep) and sometimes that doesn't even work. Sometimes he'll just scream for so long and I'll just give up. Sometimes he gets 2 naps, sometimes 1. Usually 2 unless we've been out doing errands and missed it. I'll try to do a wind down (bath, dinner, story time, bottle, bed) and get him to bed between 8 and 9, but he'll usually still freak out if he goes to bed.

In addition to the teeth (which I think it'd be worth giving meds 30mins before bed) he sounds OT and like he has become dependent on you bouncing him.

Have you tried doing set nap times?  Have you tried any of the other BW strategies to help him sleep - gradual withdrawal or walk in walk out?

When you do one nap does he nap better?
