Early Wakings!
« on: February 18, 2011, 15:23:32 pm »
This is something we've been having on and off for the last little while... DD, who is 21 months, will have EW for a few days, then revert to normal for a few days, it keeps going like that, but the EW are now getting earlier and earlier - 5:20 this morning!  Basically she's been sleeping 9h30 to 10h a night which I really don't think is enough for her!

Here's our routine on a good day:

W: 6:30
E: 8:00
E: 11:15
S: 12:15-2:15
E: 5:45
S: 7:30

On bad days, the nap is shorter (we have a chronic short nap issue at home where she now naps approx 1h, while at daycare she's around 2h) and she might wake up around 5:30.  Her bedtime also sometimes is 7PM if she's too tired, or 8 PM if she slept well of if it just falls that way.

She's not sick and might have been teething but nothing major that I know of.  She's usually quite happy and in a good mood, although on the week-ends we can see that she gets very tired by the end of the day due to the short naps.

In the morning when she wakes, she cries and if we don't pick her up within a few minutes, it escalates quite fast to a distress cry.  It's been that way for a while but since she was waking up at a "regular" time, it was not an issue for us to pick her up quickly, but now it's getting quite annoying. We've tried going to see her and explaining that it's still night time and mommy and daddy are sleeping but it really just escalates the crying.

Do you have ideas of what we can do to help her get more sleep? I'm scared that she'll get into an OT cycle if this continues (and she might already be in it!).

thanks!
Elise

I only have 1 minute so have to dash but we got a Groclock recently for Alex (he was 27mo) and it's been fantastic!
There's a sticky on Groclocks- have a read and see from other's experiences if you think it would help you

We are in basically the SAME boat here with my DS - 20.5 months. I may buy the US version of the GroClock - but don't think he'll get it yet so might wait a couple more months. I'm also realizing that he USUALLY has a better/longer night (but still only between 10.5-11 hours, as that seems to be his max) if he sleeps 1.5-1.75 hours so I may have to do a nap cut.

we got a gro-clock at 22 months and it worked well for us. DS has always been quite random with his wake up time so we needed him to accept that there was a time to start the day. To begin with if he got upset I would go in and we would wait for the sunshine together and then we would make a big fuss about it being morning etc. It did take him quite a while to accept but he is spirited/touchy and it does not make him go back to sleep but he now knows that we are not getting up until the sunshine and he is much happier about being in his room. I would try it!

Nathan (22 months) has been EW between 4:50-5:45 for nearly a month now... I feel your pain! We have been letting him take as long a nap as he wants (usually 2 hrs these days) and then putting him to bed at 8:00, rather than his usual 7:30. This doesn't seem to be working for us, so I am going to start capping his nap instead. I will cut it back to 1.5 hrs this week to see if it helps, with a 7:30 bedtime. Maybe your DD is also ready for less daytime sleep? After a week if this doesn't work, I will decide about either cutting it shorter or keeping it at 1.5 hrs and pushing bedtime back to 8pm again.

I hate that he might be beginning to drop the nap this early, but I hate getting up at 5am even more. Big hugs! It is really hard to plan a normal day when you are starting that early in the morning.

I doubt that in my case it would be due to the naps since at home, she really doesn't nap well.  But I'll try to pay attention to the length of the naps, maybe there is a link there and I didn't think about it!
Does anyone know if they sell the gro-clock in Canada? I'll start making some phone calls because this thing looks fantastic!!

thanks a lot for the advice, we'll definitely try it out!
