amount for 3 month old.
« on: December 08, 2010, 03:08:57 am »
I know it is in Tracy's book but I can't find it. How much should a 3 month be eating in a 24hr period?
thanks.

You can get a rough estimate by their weight it's 2-2.5oz per lb of body weight. Most babies seem to fall somewhere around the 30oz mark - some a bit more and some a bit less. The advice mainly is to feed to apetite, if they are draining bottles add another oz and providing they are gaining weight steadily, meeting milestones and have plenty of wet and dirty nappies they are getting enough!

My DD2 just turned 3 months this week.  She feeds 7 times in a 24 hour period and takes about 4.5 oz each time, so that is about 31.5 oz.  Some days she seems to want several 5 oz bottles, other days if I make bottles that size, she leaves an ounce or more.  As Lolly said, appetite is highly variable among babies, and even among the same LO from day to day.

thanks for your responses. O is all over the map. I used to make 5oz bottles and then 6 cause he wanted more and then he was only eating 3... I can't figure this kid out, so I never know when he has had enough....He usually only eats 6 times a day and right now I am offering him 5-6 oz per bottle. It seems he eats 6, then 3, then 6 then 3, but I don't want to offer him less??? Sometimes he just sucks to suck and then has a huge puik! I am not sure if I am making sense so just wanted to see what was "normal".
