Ten month old how much formula? should I take my babies weight into account?

Hi there,

Since implementing EASY I have cut my DS's formula down to three bottles of 8 oz. He drains every ounce and my concern is that he isn't getting enough fluid (he does drink a little water in the day, but not a lot) The thing is, he is a very tall little chap and weighs 24 pounds already at just 10 months. Should that be a consideration in how much formula he has? His weight is perfect for his height even though he's off both the height and weight scale now, he is in proportion. I have noticed his fontanelle is dipped slightly and it never was before.

In the UK a minimum of 20oz is recommended up to 1 year along with meals so it sounds like your lo is taking plenty.  Dairy foods, milk in cereal, etc also count towards the 20oz total.  I would keep offering water along with meals and any snacks he has and he will eventually take it if he is thirsty.

You could also make the bottles up to the max the bottle will take (I'm assuming 9oz as most seem to be!) if he is draining them which will give him a bit extra.

What type of cup do you offer water in? If it's a valved/ non spill then I would swap it for a free flow like the tommee tippee basic flip top cup. The non-spill are really hard work to drink from so a free flow allows them to get more. You could also try him with a straw cup to see if he will drink more through that!

My 10 month old gets 4 8 oz bottles a day and weighs about 24 lbs. too. We're having trouble getting him eating much beyond pureed baby foods still (he gags and vomits) so the liquid is very important still. Does he wake at night hungry? Or act hungry at other times of the day? If he seems okay, I'd just make sure he's getting plenty of solids.

Thank you everyone. The bottles he has at the moment take 8 oz max which is what I'm giving him. He has a free flow Tommy Tippee cup, I was bought a non spill one but when I tried it first and could barely get anything out I thought hmmm not good! I never thought of giving him a straw cup, I thought he would be too young, I will try that as he will find it very interesting! Yesterday he took more water, I think like you said if he's thirsty he will take it. He eats his solids very well and thanks to 12 days of PU/PD training he is now sleeping 11 hours throught the night HURRAH! Thank you for your support.

I forgot to tell you that I bought Sam a cup with a straw and he loves it! It took him 30 seconds to figure it out and he drinks lots more water from it, so thanks again.x.
