How long should a baby nurse per session
« on: January 01, 2011, 02:24:56 am »
Hello,
My LO only nurses about 10 mins, sometimes longer but not usually more than 20.  This was the case with my first as well.  I haven't had her weighted in a couple of weeks but she has been gaining well.  It just seems that everyone talks about 30 or more minute feeds and allowing time for the baby to come off the breast/take a break or change a diaper than try again.  Should I be allowing my LO more time to nurse??

Both mine were like that too.  Neither of them nursed for longer than 10/15mins max, and my DS2 is usually done in 3-5mins and has always been quick, even as a newborn.  I know that you hear about long nursing sessions, but really every baby is different.  The most important things are that she is satisfied, goes an appropriate amount between feeds, has enough wet/messy diapers, and is gaining and thriving.  :)

That is what I thought but was doubting myself...I really would have felt terrible if I was denying them something they were still hungry for...HAPPY NEW YEARS

It depends on you and your LO, and over time the feeds get quicker (well, they did with DS!!!) - as long as they gain weight, have wet nappies and are happy and healthy then they are fine :o)
L x Having a bw break from 1 Feb 2012 - if you want to get in touch please send me a pm.  I may not be here but you are all in my thoughts xxxx (probably be back some time)

still happily married, just not counting!

Agree with pp, the length of feeds can vary greatly from baby to baby, mine were both sooo different. DD would take over 30minutes whilst DS was a 7minute per side feeder.

The important thing is that you let your LO finish the feed herself, if she's no longer interested, she's turning away, then that's it. You can burp her and try to offer the breast again But I wouldn't worry, especially seeing she's gaining weight well.
