Tummy sleeping - Could it have come at a worse time?
« on: December 31, 2010, 03:16:23 am »
Hello,

DD is 5m and learned how to roll from her back to front about a month ago.  Recently, she has decided that she never wants to be on her back (she'd be walking, probably driving the car, if she had her say), and unless engaged with someone will almost immediately flip over to her front.  This is not a problem during her activity time, but has made nap time and bedtime a bit more challenging.

Previously, she was swaddled and could not roll.  Now she can muster the momentum to roll while being swaddled, so we have switched her to a sleep sack.

Two questions have come from this:
1.  Will it get better?  It being her ability to learn how to sleep on her stomach since she refuses to sleep on her back.
2.  Is there anything that we can do to support this transition?  We tried Ssh/Pat when she was younger, but this only escalated her - however, today we started to gently rub her back while shh her and that did not appear to help, but it did not hinder either so we will likely continue with it to see if it helps.  W2S has not worked during the times that we have tried - at about the 25-35 minute mark she will be stirred, but then settle back down.  However, she will still wake up at the 40-45 minute mark (with that being said, she wakes happy and another posting helped with suggestions with a baby that wakes happy and alert after 45 minutes).  PU/PD hasn't been great for baby or adult - again, she rarely settles when picked up (more frequently settles for mom than dad) and the angle of the crib is also not good for the adult's back (just being honest).

TIA,

Matthew

It will get better!  Once my LOs got used to tummy sleeping it improved their sleep.  I found shush/pat tough at younger ages, but much more effect when LO was sleeping on tummy and I could pat his back.  At this age, more patting, less shushing helped mine.

Depending on her routine, waking at 45 minutes may mean she needs a little more A time.

Great to know!  It's 11pm here and she had woken 3 times between 7 and 10.  However, she was able to put herself back to sleep for two of the three times, so we're pretty happy.

She would often calm with a soother, and is now at the age of mouthing everything, but also uses her hands/fingers/fists/whole arm if she could to soothe, so I think being on her front and being able to pin down her elusive hand will also help her settle.  It's very cute right now since she's just learning how to sleep on her front and hasn't quite figured out how to rest her head to a side, so she's face planted on her fist with her mouth wrapped around it - it seems very odd, but it works for her, so I'm not going to say anything to her now :)

Her A time is already pretty high (between 2-2.5 hours).  We wondered if maybe we were pushing her A time too much, but if we tried to put her down earlier than 1.75 hours we would battle for at least 15 minutes before she would have any semblence of settling, so we wait for the 2nd or 3rd yawn/eye rub/etc.

We have been monitoring what her A time is and trying to do more low stim activities towards the end of her A time to avoid sending her to bed too high.

Thanks for the input!
