a little advice needed from those who pumped for DF
« on: January 14, 2011, 06:50:07 am »
I am trying to pump for the DF.
I read somewhere to pump 20mins after a feed.
DD feeds every 4 hours, however I don't seem to be getting enough out!
Today I pumped 45mins after feeding and got almost an oz (second feed of the day)

What has worked for you? how long after feeding did you pump? can't find fenugrek here :( so that isn't an option.

Thanks

I pumped first thing in the am - I had a whole lot after the night, so I pumped one side in the am, and fed her from the other side.  Then I would pump in the evening while dh was giving her the df - I could usually get enough in 2 pumping sessions.  However, as she got older, she took more at the df, and I had to pump 3-4x a day to get enough - I would usually pump 30 min or so after a feed or during her naps - I really couldn't pump reliably when she was around.  What kind of pump do you have?  I had a manual pump, and then switch to the Medela electric, and I had much better success with that.

Similar to Michelle I would also need 2 pumping sessions to make up one DF, so what I did was to pump in the am from one breast and feed DS on the other (single side feeding - but I was usually 'bursting' in the morning). And then pump both sides after the DF. I would have usually have enough for 2 feeds, if needed.
For me pumping after a feed never really got me anything (or very little), I always had to wait at least 2 hours to get a half decent output.

I usually have to pump at least 1-1.5 hrs after a feed to get much and then I worry there won't be enough for the next feed. Usually have to pump after the first morning feed then before the df and still often don't have enough (I have less at night than I used to). Considering fenugreek or something as well.

first am pumping from the opposite side was enough for me with Oscar but I was doing it EVERY day from around a week old so my body kind of KNEW to make that extra then.

I never even considered pumping at 10 or 11pm as then I would prefer to feed direct (which I did with Emma).

Have you tried DF direct from the breast? It worked with E so so well....

sorry guys stopped pumping cause we got a call on friday afternoon to say that DH mother had a brain haemorrhage. We got the call at 4.30pm and we had to get a flight to Ireland straight away. The flight was 8.5 hours! we flew all night and the time difference is 4 hours. So I am not sure what EASY we are on at the moment or will be for the next week of so. DH's mum isn't going to make it so we are just waiting for her to pass on naturally, but she is in no pain. Will start pumping again when I am back in Dubai!
