not again !!
« on: January 29, 2011, 13:17:50 pm »
Hi

Tyler is now 14 months, he was a very bad eater and would eat practically nothing all day.  Then he was ill with a sickness bug and after that was fab at eating (although he wont let you feed him and cant use a spoon properly yet, so everything was finger food), that went on for a while.  Then he had his mmr and now has 6 teeth coming through (including molars) and is once again refusing food.  Today he had a couple dry shreddies, 2 blueberries and a yoghurt for breakfast, for lunch it was half a fish finger and half a yoghurt.  He's now having a nap after having a bottle to go down.
What can I do, his eating is ropey to say the least.  We all sit down together, I make sure its things he likes (usually wrapped in breadcrumbs, with veggies) but nothing.  Am at a loss.

Help....
Sarah

Hi there we have a lot of hit and miss days with teeth I'm afraid.  All you can do is offer and make sure he has access to plenty of liquids so he doesn't get dehydrated.  They won't starve, honestly they won't.  It's a survival instinct.
The tweaking never stops!

We've been having eating woes for the past month here - and it's hard. As Wendy said, as long as you are offering a healthy variety of food often and making sure he's hydrated there's not much else you can do. To be honest, I'd have been thrilled with the breakfast and lunch you described some days lately! 6 teeth is a lot at once and the MMR shot can definitely cause reactions too. Are you giving ibuprofen for the teeth? Offering smoothies and soft foods?

Hi

Thanks for the response, he is very suspicious of anything to drink other than milk or water.  He is also on watered down prune juice for constipation.  I offer him things which I know he likes but are also easy on the gums like banana, cherry tomatoes (he just sucks the middle out) and yoghurts.  Dinner was slightly better, after refusing casserole he had a potato waffle, 2 bits of wafer thin beef (i mean teeny tiny bits), strawbs, blueberries and then abit of a heinz desert.
Will try omlette again tomorrow as he normally likes this and should be easy on his gums.  Just had another look and he has more teeth again popping through.  He has medication before bed, and I give him the powders and bonjela during the day as I dont like the idea of him having too many meds on such a small apetite.
