12 week old NW help please
« on: February 01, 2011, 12:35:16 pm »
Hi all.  We've been following the EASY routine (without a firm 3 or 4 hour - my son tends to fall into the 3.5 hour naturally) and our usual day looks like this:

E  600
A  630
S  730

E  930
A  1000
S  1100

E  100
A  130
S  230

E  400
A  430
S  530ish - catnap

E  600
A  700 - bath and bedtime routine
E  730
S  800

He typically nightwakes at 1200 (pacifier), between 100 and 200 for a feeding (between 4 and 6 ozs), then nightwakes every half hour or so from 300 to 600.  We have been going in and giving him his pacifier during that 3-hour-period and he'll easily fall back asleep but it doesn't last long.  Some nights he will sleep for an hour or more after giving him the pacifier, but that's not the norm.  I thought maybe he was waking out of hunger so tried to feed him last night at 430, but it ended up being a dreamfeed since he fell back asleep before I got back with his bottle and he only ate 3.5 ozs.

He doesn't have a problem falling to sleep on his own with his pacifier.  He doesn't cry or need to be shh-patted.  Even when he NWs he is easily calmed just by popping in the soother.

He naps well almost anywhere - we allow him to nap in his swing, bassinet, crib, or play chair.  He weighs 13 lbs 2 ozs at last check and had been eating about 30 ozs/day.  The last two days however he has been eating less (around 25 - 28 ozs), not sure if this had an impact on his sleep since the NW has been happening for weeks.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi, sorry you are having a difficult time.  How do you try to settle when your LO wakes?  Have you tried ssh/pat or do you just offer the pacifier?  Does your LO have independent sleep during the day?  I would say your routine during the day looks fine.  The only thing that stands out to me is the last A to bed is 2 hours on a 30 minute nap.  (Did I read that right?)  I am also wondering if the first naps are slightly too long.  What do you think?  Is your LO on the high end of sleep needs or more average?

I am sorry I can't offer any help. We have the exact same problem. Our son is 13 weeks old and used to be a terrible sleeper during the day but always great at night. He pretty much slept through the night from 8 weeks.
With the help of BW we have sorted out his daytime naps and he is doing great on a 3-hour routine. However, since his days are so much better now his nights turned into a nightmare. He goes down at 7:30 with no problem, but from 11pm or so he keeps waking up every 30 minutes to 1 hour looking for his pacifier. He's clearly not hungry and goes right back to sleep after he gets the pacifier but we still have to get up all the time  :(
We have started to put him down unswaddled hoping he would discover his fingers and it works occassionally but it doesn't satisfy him like the pacifier.
Shh/Pat doesn't work for us. He gets really upset as soon as we start and completely wakes up so we always rely on the pacifier.
Our routine is as follows:
E:7:00
A:7:20
S:8:30 (he wakes up after 1 hr and I'm trying to extend his nap)

E:10:00
A:10:20
S:11:30 (we have to do the school run for DS#1 at this time so mostly naps in stroller or carrier)

E:13:00
A:13:20
S:14:00
A:15:30

E:16:00
A:16:20
S:17:30 (catnap in carrier)

A:18:30 (bathtime)
E:19:00
S:19:30

We tried to do the DF around 22:00-23:00 but the nights seemed to be even worse. We ow wait for him to demand food at anytime between 1:00 and 3:00.

Mawa - Would you like to start a new thread, so you can get some eyes on your situation?
