Wake to Cluster Feed?
« on: February 14, 2011, 17:05:33 pm »
Hi, I know that it's possible that this has been posted already, so feel free to point me in the right direction!

DD is 6 weeks today, and I am starting to implement EASY. She was fast asleep still when 6 pm rolled around, I gently woke her and fed her, but felt like it was a DF because she was so sleepy! I tried to keep her up, but she fell right back asleep.

7 pm is here, I have to see about waking her for bath-time, I will probably do it after 8 tonight if I don't get my answer soon.

So, do I wake her for the cluster feeds and bathtime, or continue on a 3-hour routine? It's my first day, so I don't have any pattern to analyze, we basically went by the book from 7am till now.

TIA!

I actually did more of a dream feed on occasion, as sometimes it was near impossible to wake Dylan up!!  I always tried, but sometimes there was just no waking him up (now, why couldn't have it been like that at 3am ;) ::))

Hm, well last night was pretty much a disaster. DD basically slept through the 6 and 8 feedings, woke around 9 ish, and I bathed her (she already missed one night). And then she was UP UNTIL 3AM!! She ate at 11, still awake, and ate at 12 and at 1 am...

DH was up with her until 3, he finally put her on the bed next to him (we didn't try to get her to sleep in crib yet, wish us luck with that one...) and she slept until 7:15.

I wasn't able to wake her at 6 and 8, is that why she was up all night?

Help, please!

Part of it could be that there's usually a growth spurt around 6 weeks of age, so that could be why she was eating more often.

If you weren't able to wake her at 6 or at 8, how long a stretch was she asleep for? If it was quite long, then it could be that her daytime sleep is taking away from her night sleep.

Yes, I do think her daytime sleep is taking away from her night time sleep.
Any ideas how to change that? Even if not with EASY, and then I could put her on EASY.

EASY has worked really well for both of my LOs. My recommendation would be to start getting her into a routine. At 6 weeks, my DD was up for around 1 hour and 15 min. every 3 hours if I remember correctly. And I woke her every 3 hours to eat during the day. If she woke sooner I'd feed her then. Here's a few links you can check out.

Jen's got you covered!  She pretty much mentioned everything that I was going too - growth spurt (the 6w one is a big one!), waking to feed every 3h during the day, day sleep possibly robbing night sleep.  The only other thing I was going to mention was that the bath might have possibly been to stimulating at that time of night - you could always bath in the morning, or at this age you really don't need to bath even every other day unless she's gotten particularly dirty.

My challenge now with EASY is A, which is affected by S.
In the morning and early afternoon she sleeps from E to E! And then she is up too much at night.
Humph.

How do I KEEP her up after E before S?

By any means neccessary. :) I know that can be easier said than done, DD was VERY dozy in the beginning. Some days I was putting cold cans of pop on her neck to keep her up during a feed! You may not be able to keep her up very long at first, but any little bit helps. Talk to her, sing, shake a rattle at her, anything to keep her from drifting off that much sooner. It'll get easier, and then you'll wish she was still sleeping all the time. ::)
