Help with 28 month old not sleeping
« on: March 03, 2011, 14:10:23 pm »
Hi, looking for some advice with my 28 month old. Up until a month ago he was a great sleeper, would nap for 2 to 2.5 hours at 1pm. We would go upstairs for bedtime at 7.30 and he'd be in bed by 8, asleep about 8.15 and sleep till 7am.
Gradually started getting later and later going to sleep, would get up and play in his room, turn on his light and now sneaks out his room. Is also waking earlier and earlier. Last night he finally went to sleep at 10 and was awake at 5.40! Let him get up at 6.30. Some nights a little better but at most is getting 9 hours at night.
Still naps for 2 hours (and I usually wake him after 2 hours).
I have a new baby coming in 2 weeks so really need to sort this out. Have ordered a gro clock and will try that. But should I cut out naps or reduce them or stick with and hope he reverts to normal? Maybe teeth related - no 2 year molars as yet but lots of drool so may be on the way.
Any advice appreciated.

We had to start cutting or skipping naps. You might as well. He may need a TON of A time after a good long 2 hour nap which makes it so he can't settle to bed until late, but then he probably ends up getting a bit OT and then wakes up too early. I'd try cutting his nap to about 1.5 hours first and see how that goes and then work from there. Then try his usual (old) bedtime and see how long it takes for him to settle. You may also want to join us on the nap dropping support thread for ages 2 to 3 years and see some of our stories/issues!

I have been a home daycare provider for over ten years.  I have a two-year-old of my own.  I'm noticing a pattern that some time between the ages of two and three there seems to be a "bedtime trouble" phase where kids won't go to sleep even when they are tired and need to.  Now that my child is going through this phase I'm surprised how little information there is on it.  All the discriptions of kids in the phase are the same.  Use to be a good sleeper....now stays up late.  I'm sorry I have no advice, but I thought I'd let you know there are more of us enduring this out there.
