Starr Chart and Confusional Arousal?
« on: March 18, 2011, 16:29:07 pm »
I was reading the EW thread and wondered what a Starr Chart was?

Also I believe that my son has some confusional arousal.  Has anyone had experience with this?  What to do?

I haven't read the posts you are mentioning but wondering if the post meant a "star" (ie reward) chart?

Just wondering what confusional arousal is!!

Yes, that may have meant reward chart!?

Confusional arousal is when they are in between sleep phases and wake slightly.  Not enough to wake but enough to be confused about where they are.  One example is sleep walking.

He wakes at 5am screeching!  I have for a while AP with him until wake time at 6am to keep from waking everyone else but with the volume of his screams I can't!  When I go in at 5am I pick him up and he falls back to sleep in my arms.  He has to have one hand in my arm pit and if he can't get in there he screams again.  Eyes closed. Eventually he goes back to sleep.

When I have had NW I do PU/PD. As soon as I touch him he flops into my arms and then I PD and his back arches and he screams.  I do this about 2-3 times and then he falls fast asleep.

I have recently tried this at 5am and he does the same thing except for the fall back to sleep.  It's like he isn't totally awake and then he eventually wakes himself up.

I have been reading about some sleep issues and this topic came to my attention.

I hope I have explained this well?!!

What do you think is causing it?

Screaming/screeching usually points to OT &/or pain, discomfort.

I thought is was nightmares and when he wakes I am not there so he calms when I go to him.  He is OT.  I know that much for sure. Because most times he will go back to sleep on me.  He is just scared so I thought he might be confused when he wakes slightly and screams for me.

I don't think it's pain or discomfort.

is it always at 5am?  Can it be habitual waking?

Always 5am no matter the BT.  I think the habitual waking is due to my AP at this time.  How does he know it's 5am no matter how long he has slept?? I have just started to not PU and AP the last few days. I do PU/PD and shh with soem back rubbing.  Lots of complaining from him about this change.  And after 4NW last night I was just too tired to not AP after the last NW!  SIGH!

I think confusional arousals are more likely to happen in the first part of the night...myself and my oldest get them, we both tend to walk & talk in our sleep. If we are not distrubed when it happens, we go right back to sleep without remembering, but if woken it makes it worse. The 5am thing seems more like habit or the way his internal clock is set. What does his routine look like otherwise?

I agree, by 5am they are in a much lighter stage of sleep so unlikely to be nightmares.

If you post your current routine we can take a look!  :)

WEll, I have looked into the EW before so I have tried a few things. This is what I try to stick to as much as possible.

5am wake-AP until 6am.
11am nap-hopefully 1.5-2hours
if short am nap I do CN at 4 for 30 min
BT is 6:30-7pm depends on naps or not.

If I can't AP I do 2 naps 9:30 for 30 min and 2:30 for 1-1.5 hours
BT at 7:30 (hoping for later wake the next day!!!)

His nap sleep time is not too reliable. If I do 2 naps he will do 40-60min for the longer nap.  If I do 1 nap he does 1-1.5 hour sleep.  He sleeps longer at Granny's house (strange!)

Yes, he does one nap there b/c he usually falls asleep in the car on the way there!

it's at 11:30/12pm b/c he is busy and granny has to put DD down for nap too around 12pm.

Sorry I should have said if he falls asleep on the way there it's at 9:30am for 20-30 min. Then his second nap is at 1pm.  He slept for 1.5 today at Granny's for pm nap.

If he doesn't fall asleep then he naps at 11:30/12pm b/c Granny does school run for DD and nap for DD at 12pm.
