Short first nap
« on: March 24, 2011, 08:35:14 am »
DD is 9 weeks. Keep getting short first nap but I know she needs and wants more as she is not particularly happy. She wakes at 630am and I have been putting her down at 745am as she yawns several times. She goes off to sleep relatively easy but then awake after 40/45 mins. Should I keep her going for 1.5 hours?

Just to update you. She was so unhappy after waking from her early nap I put her back to sleep and she did go off again at 845am. Does this mean I should have extended her A time to start with?

I wouldn't extend A time, in fact I would put her down sooner than 7:45. It sounds to me like she's overtired. 7:30 may help.

Here are some examples routines for lo's around the same age as your dd.   The average A time at this age is 1 hour to 1h 15mins but I always found/find the first A time can be one of the shortest so give an hour a go as Canwi suggested and see how you get on from there  :-*

Thanks. Definitley think you are right about shortening A time rather than extend as this morning I did 1.5 A time (before seeing your replies) and only got 1/2 hour nap and she was not happy.

Hi. A bit more success this morning after your advice. She woke at 645 and by 730 she was yawning so I put her down. She slept until 845 so 1.25 hours. What should I do for her next nap as in an hour she will be due a feed?

I'd prob try and feed her a bit early so at least she won't be waking up from the next nap hungry.

Ok. I am feeding her now. She also seems tired so should I put her to bed after feed? Thanks

Yes, if that's about her A time then go for it.  I always figure it's better getting some sort of feed in before a nap if the times are going to clash then put them down for nap as hopefully they won't wake up hungry.

I put her down straight after feed and she slept for 45 mins aagh!!!! I tried to extend with paci as she seemed still tired. No luck so I have taken her outside in pram and with a bit of rocking she keeps drifting in and out of light sleep. I just don't get it. I really need to crack this nap thing as when I end up feeding after 2 hours she doesn't feed much and by bedtime she is so tired she barely feeds so I have more feeds in the night. My DS who is now 2 was so different, he would nap really well and just about anywhere. DD seems to want to be awake constantly in the day and can't sleep with much noise at all.

I've never used it but wish I had with ds1 as every sound use to wake him up!  It's got to be worth a try!
