Light sleeper - birds wake my 16 week old up!
« on: April 05, 2011, 11:49:39 am »
I have many issues regarding my son's naps but I am tackling them with BW. However, once he gets back to sleep after his 30/45 minute wake I find that although he is asleep the smallest of sounds wake him up. A crow has just made a noise and now he is crying. I worry that at the moment his crib is in our room (at the back of the house), by 6 months he will be in his own cot in his own room which is at the front of the house and a lot noisier - especially when the school children from the school at the end of the road walk home/ to cars down our road. We do have good double glazing, he's just such a light sleeper!

Will he eventually be able to settle himself or will this be an ongoing problem? I also worry that he will still be a terrible napper when I go back to work - he'll be 9 months and he will be constantly miserable at nursery!

I have an ex light sleeping DD who is now VERY noisy when her younger bro is napping. A white noise machine has really helped with both of them. We live in an apartment so I was almost going crazy with the stomping from the folks above us but the noise machine has really helped. I just weaned DS's paci with a fair amount of crying at night and for the most part he didnt disturb DD. During the day when DS is napping and DD is screeching and banging and running around the noise rarely bothers him.
It would certainly be worth a go and can often work as a sleep cue for your baby too

White noise is tends to work amazingly well! I second what pp said.

Also, at nursery, LOs tend to adapt and he may surprise you and do well there once he's settled in.

I would also recommend white noise.
We just downloaded a white noise track off the internet and made a 3 hour loop of it and loaded it onto the IPOD and play it off the little stereo in our DD's room. It's awesome as we can take the IPOD with us when we travel to in-laws or hotels and it really helps to cut down outside noise!!

P.s. We also OWN pet birds and they drive me crazy as I'm always worried they will wake her up, but she can't hear them with the white noise and they are in the room next to her. :)

100% Agree that white noise is KEY!!!  It would drown out the noise of my DS going crazy while my DD was trying to sleep
