If you give him pain meds before sleep time and he sleeps better, then you know the problem is pain. Doesn't rule out non-teething pain, but at least gives you a point in a direction.

Thats what happened yesterday, before he went down for nap #4 I gave him some tylenol as I was desperate, thats when he finally slept for 1.5 hours. But as I said he is much better today, so I guess it wasnt teething?

May have been a one-off, or he may have needed the extra sleep to break an OT cycle, or maybe coming thru and not hurting as badly today. They do keep us guessing, don't they?
Both my kids' sleep went crazy around developmental leaps as well. Whenever they were off for a few days, DH and I learned to look for a new skill emerging.

I just checked his mouth again, he has a tiny white spot that has been there since he was 3 months old and it does feel like there is a small lump under that white spot. SO maybe it is a tooth and just moving every now and then
