Need help with newborn!!!!
« on: April 23, 2011, 13:15:12 pm »
My newborn is is 1.5 weeks old and will not sleep.  To sleep at night I've been putting hiim in bed with me where he sometimes sleeps after falling asleep nursing.  Last night he was half awake from 330 to 630 when we got up.  He kept on nursing falling off the boob and waking up trying to find it again.  During the day he sleeps in short spurts in my arms or I can sometimes get him to sleep 20 minutes or so in a vibrating seat.  I have a 3 year old who I feel like I can't do anything with bc of the baby.  Please help us get some sleep!!!!

Just wanted to add I can't even accidental parent and get him to sleep in his crib.  Even if he's already asleep and I lay him down he wakes right up.  I'll take advice on how to AP and get him to sleep in his crib.  I just need better sleep and need to be able to lay him down during the day!!!

Is he swaddled? Are you trying to put him down nice and early for his first nap in the morning ie after he's been awake only say 45 mins or so?

We had been swaddling him but he kept kicking out of it and I did try to put him down nice and early and he would seem to entertain the idea of going to sleep but he just kept waking up the once or twice that he did go to sleep.  Any idea about nighttime sleep?  We're just miserable and I know he is too but don't know what to do!

I would try swaddling him again, he is probably jolting lots. You need to do the swaddle really tight - if he can move his arms, it's not tight enough. If he's still escaping, the Miracle Blanket (US) or Mothercare swaddle wrap (UK) are reallyl good at containing even the best escape artists. Does he take a dummy?

He did sleep in his crib 30-45 today so maybe there is hope.  We swaddled him but apparently not very well because he ended up with the blanket up by his face.  I got some swaddling things at Target to try; they didn't have the Miracle Blanket so if these don't work I'll have to get one of those.  He does take a dummy but seems to wake when it falls out of his mouth so I think if I'm going to get serious I need to not use it if possible.  He has fallen asleep without it before.

Keep your awake times REALLY short. Remember that A includes all the time it takes him to feed, and all the time it takes him to fall asleep.

The swaddling blanket I got doesn't hold him so I'll have to go get a miracle one.  Am I asking to much for my now almost 2 week old to sleep in his crib?  The nights are killing me and I don't think he gets a good night sleep falling off the boob and waking up to find it again.  I just don't want to make the same mistakes I made with DS1 since once I got him sleeping in his own bed he was so much happier since he wasn't overtired!

Do you lie him down awake or asleep? I don't think there are many two week olds who can fall asleep by themselves in the crib...

I've treid both.  He has gone to sleep laying in the crib once or twice with a lot of help.  Should I be getting him to sleep before I lay him down at this point rather than trying shh/pat?

At two weeks old I would use shush-pat wherever possible to have him fall asleep in your arms, and then lay him down. If you're not feeding to sleep (even at some naps if not all), you're doing great. If he falls asleep with a nipple in his mouth, he's going to wake up every time he loses it.

Thanks for your help.  I think I'm just expecting too much and too tired and out of sorts because I hadn't thought of how much a baby would disrupt our normal routine (crazy I know!)  Couldn't find the miracle blanket at any store around here so I ordered one offline hopefully will have it in a few days.  I will try to get him to sleep in the crib tonight with the other swaddle blanket he just keeps waking up and I get so tired I just put him in bed with me to get some sleep!  I feel like I'm a first time mom; if anyone read my posts they wouldn't believe I have a 3 year old that sleeps like a champ that I used BW with!  Thanks again.
