30 mins nap in her cot each time.
« on: April 28, 2011, 10:03:18 am »
I have posted in the props section before. My DD is coming 14 weeks. She has started to sleep in this hammock which moves up and down on a spring since the 2nd month as she refused to be put down. I am trying to wean her because she can't sleep without it which makes it very difficult for us to bring her out.

We are quite successful as the past 1 week she has been sleeping in her bed for the night. Day time, once she starts being cranky, after A time of about 1hr 20 mins, I'll tuck her in, give her the pacifier and she'll sleep on her own after some rubs on her head. So total A time is about 1 hr 30 mins. But the max she sleeps is 30 mins. She didn't jolt her arms (used to do that, no longer now), she just stirs from her sleep, starts moving her arms (not the sudden jolt) and then starts scratching her face. The first few days I start weaning her from the hammock, her flailing arms always kept her from sleeping. So i swaddled her. But realized she doesn't need to be swaddled to sleep. So I half swaddled from the body down. I tried W2S. But it doesn't work. Could I be doing it wrong? I rub her head a bit, she will move her arms, does that consider W2S? Or must she open her eyes?

The only one time she actually slept past 30 mins was yesterday after feeding her at 4pm, she slept at 5.35. I went to stir her up at 6pm.  Initially she just moved her arms, then eventually woke up and open her eyes. She cried a bit and I gave her the pacifier and she went back to sleep till 730 and I woke her for a feed. However it was raining very heavily with thunder and lightning. She slept throughout. Could that be the reason for her to sleep? She doenst like the environment to be too quiet?

My EASY is a bit mess up. Because I'm doing a few things together. Weaning her from the hammock, increased her feed to 6oz from previously 5oz, trying to get her to sleep longer at night in her cot, moving from 3hrs to 3.5hrs between feeds.

Once she woke up from her 30 mins nap, she started scratching her face and cried. I'm afraid that she will be ot, so I put her back in the hammock to catch up on some sleep. Dont want her to go cold turkey on the hammock.

I read that 30 mins nap can be a sign of ut? That's why I tried to increased her A time and went to 3.5 hrs between feeds. The max is about 1hr 45min. During A time I will read to her, exercise for her, walk her around the house (doesn't seem to wind her down - her head will turn left and right, trying to see all the different things around her), finally put her down on the bed, talked or sing to her a bit, once she starts scratching her face or give a fake cry, I take the cue, give her the pacifier (if she's sleepy, she takes it very willingly), half swaddled her, rub her head, she goes to sleep in about 10-15 mins. Sometimes I try to increase her A time but she starts to cry. That means I can't increase her A time right?

She starts going to bed earlier now. At about 7.30. I can't do cluster feed or dream feed because when she is sleeping soundly she doesn't want to drink much no matter how hard we try. But we still try to give her as much as she can drink. Is that the reason why she still wakes up at around 2+ for another feed?  She drinks all 6oz.

Sorry for all the questions. I feel so messed up. I'm going back to work on 23 May and I really want to wean her off the hammock and get a good routine by then.

Her EASY now is roughly like this:

E Around 7am
A
S 8.30
E 10.30
A
S 12.15
E 2
A
S 3.45
E 5.30
A

Am I supposed to do a cluster feed at 7.30 and then DF at 10?

I always do a last feed before 11pm but she wakes up about 4 hours later. I tried not doing any DF but she still wakes up in the middle of the night about 4 hours after her last feed. When she wakes up, she will drain almost all 6oz.

Please help me!

After a 30 minute nap do you reduce the next A time?  Also can you extend the naps at all when she does wake at 30 minutes?

You're doing a great job weaning your props!  Sometimes it can just take a while for the naps to extend after weaning a prop.

You probably could just do a bedtime feed rather than a cluster feed if your LO is taking a 6oz feed.  With the DF, some babies take to it and some don't.  You could try not doing one and just see how the nights go for a week if you are finding she's not taking it.  It is not unusual at all for a 14 week old to need a DF and another NF so try not to worry about that.

Thanks for your reply.  I just can't get her to sleep past 30mins. She wakes up crying after awhile. She only stops crying after I put her back on the hammock.  However this afternoon she actually slept for an hour twice in the noon without the hammock! My hubby was the one taking care of her while I went to do my hair. The first one hr noon nap he needed to resettle her after the first 30 mins but not the second noon nap. So happy.  She also had a 30 mins cat nap at 6+pm before I bath for her. She woke up without being cranky which I'm really glad. Think I need to reduce her A time to 1hr 30mins.

How I wish she can sleep through the night! I guess she's not ready for that yet. :)
