Short naps are most often down to needing a routine tweak, do you want to post your EASY? I was never able to extend naps with PUPD, and anyway it's really not appropriate to use unless he's crying. What happens if you just leave him for a bit?

I was also never successful with pu/pd - and had a short napper for the first 4.5-5 months :( he was/is a spiritied sleeper (otherwise a textbook baby) so putting him down EARLIER was always key.  too bad it took me a long time to figure that out!  honstly, there were days where I would just hold him for the remainder of his nap in order to keep him rested.  it has not caused any problems with sleep.  there is a light at the end of the tunnel!  it will get better -- at 8 months he is much more predicatble and giving reliable sleep signals

Wake up 6 am
E 7 am
S 9 am (woke up by 9:30)
Solids at 12 pm
A from wake up time on wards

E 11 am
A from 11:30 to 2
S 2 pm to 2:37

E 3 pm
A 3:30 onwards
Solids at 5:00pm
S 6 pm (only for 20 minutes)

Bath at 6:50
E 7:20
fell sleep at 8 pm

he is now on 4 hour easey and i started solids 4 days ago.  he DOES NOT wake up at night, but to my horror he woke up at 4 am this morning!!!

The way i put him to sleep is put his grow bag on and sing a nap time song, put him in his crib.
never swaddled, he hated it from day one. no white noise... nothing, no hanging toys, no stimulation.

I just want him to go by the 4 hour easy and the corresponding naps from the BW book... is that too much to ask?

AND, any idea why he woke up at 4 am today? he has never done that.

Yeh, the problem is that his A times are too long so you're getting overtired (OT) naps. At 5 months old he can really only handle a max of about 2-2.5hrs - but he's getting 3, even 4.5hrs at times. That 2-2.5hrs is also the max after a LONG nap, 1.5hrs or more. After a short nap, you'll need to cut the next nap down even more. I'd try cutting his A times down and see if that helps.
