Way too early for stage two teat?
« on: May 23, 2011, 12:00:26 pm »
We had a midwife visit yesterday and she seem surprised we were using the stage one teats with ddand advise to move go stage two ones, now dd is only 4 days old this seems silly early to me. I wouldn't say she struggled on one teats and is still drinking the same 2ozs either way. She did have a bit of gas but this doesn't seem to have improved with stage two teats and I'd say she even spits up a bit more with them. What do you think?

Meh...I'd go with your gut instinct. I switched Jacob to s2 teats because he was ready (and not according to the timeline on the packaging...can't remember if it was early or late...it was so long ago!) and he was fine. He was ready and I did notice a difference.

If you think she's not ready, don't do it. You know her better than anyone after all!

I agree! The ages on the packets are just guides, mine went up earlier than the packets said, but they needed to. If she was doing fine on the stage 1 and was less gassy I would switch back for now personally. Which bottles are you using, if it's the TT closer to nature bottles you could try the vari-flow, they can be controlled by the baby, so if she does want a faster flow she can control it herself. Not all vari-flows are good for new borns though, Avent for example is very fast!

Congratulations on your new arrival by the way!

Agree with PP's, just follow your LO's cues to determine when and if you need to go up a teat size.  At 4 days old, there does not even seem to be enough time to be able to determine if she is giving you the cues she needs to move up.  BTW, cues include her taking 20 mins or more to finish a bottle; pulling away from the teat and seeming frustrated due to lack of flow; sucking so hard on the teat that it puckers, and gas.

My DD2 is 8.5 mo and just moved up two weeks ago to the Avent size indicated for 6 mo.  She didn't move up to the 3 mo size (per guidelines) until she was 5 mo.  So, babies move at their own pace.  There are no hard and fast rules you need to play by.

I'd stick with size 1 if that's what you're happy with!

Just wanted to jump on and say many congratulations!  How's Callum finding being a big brother?

Thanks for your replies everyone. To be fair she has done ok on the stage 2s so don't know if I should change back or not. So confused!

Hi Karen, Callum is being a caring big brother thanks but think he thought he'd have a fully ready play mate when she came lol

My LO uses Avent and she certainly did not follow the guidelines on the packaging either...  hated the size 1, but stayed on the size 2 until well after the 3 months suggested for the next step... but then only used the size 3's from 4 1/2 months until just over 5 months and then moved to the 4's just before hitting 6 months, which is when they recommend them.

Follow her cues... I always allow a couple of days too see if the new size is working out... takes them a bit to adapt their sucking/swallowing patterns to the new flow :)
