water for bottles

DS is 91/2 months and I still boil the water for his bottles but I was just wondering at what age can you stop boiling the water and use just plain tap water?

I have never boiled the water when making formula for my kiddos.  I would just look at it as you would for anything else... Are you comfortable giving your kid a glass of the water to drink without boiling it?  If the answer is yes then you are fine to stop boiling the water.  :)

I think the reason for boiling the water is that the formula powder is not sterile, & so may contain harmful bacteria.  You need to mix with hot water over 70 degrees to kill off any bacteria that may be present.

What PP said!

Also it depends on the quality of your tap water, UK is generally good but we do get times when there have been cases bugs in drinking water so I have always played safe and boiled the water. My DS has some reflux formula until he was nearly 2 and DD still gets some at bedtime and it really isn't that big a deal to put a bit of boiloed water into a bottle.

The recs in the UK are to follow the directions on the formula packaging for as long as you are giving it (and that includes sterilising bottles as milk breeds bugs fast) and if giving water to babies it should be boiled and cooled up to 6 months.

My doctor (in Canada) told me not to worry about it at all.  Our tap water is safe and I use concentrate formula, not powdered.  I still did boil it for the first 4 months out of paranoia :)  I don't sterilize bottles though... I always rinse them in hot water when DD is done with them and then soak in the hottest water my tap will make for 15 minutes then I wash and rinse well.

I live in Canada too but I use powdered formula.  I forgot to ask when I was at the doctors the other week.  I dont know if I should keep boiling the water until he is 1 but its not like I make his bottles warm anyways, since its getting warmer out he has been taking them at room temperature.
