Drastic fall back
« on: August 02, 2011, 22:46:41 pm »
Hi. I am new to this site so I am not really sure on all of the abbreviations, sorry. Up until s month ago my 1 year old was a great sleeper but now he wakes during the night for 2- 3 hours and refuses to go back to sleep unless he is placed in bed with us  :(

How do I go about teaching him to self soothe and trying to break this habit he is now in?? Any advice would be great as we are seriously sleep deprived.

Hi & Welcome to Baby Whisperer!  :)

Are you familiar with Tracy Hoggs 'Baby Whisperer books'? This site is based on her books & teachings so if you haven't read any then I would highly recommend 'Secrets of the Baby Whisperer' &/or 'The Baby Whisperer Solves all your problems'.

Can you please post your son's current routine (including the time he wakes up in the morning/ time & length of naps/ time he goes to bed & any times he wakes during the night).

The below link will help you with the abbreviations we use on this site:

How long have you been bringing him into bed with you when he wakes? It could well be that this has become a 'prop'. Has he ever slept independently?

Hope this helps?

I have read the baby whisperer book and this is how we first got lo to sStn. He has been sstn for 9 months and all of a sudden there has been this major shift.

Ds routine is;
530am wake
6am Bottle
630am Breakfast
8am Nap (1/1 half hours)
10:30 morning tea
11:30 Bottle
12pm nap (45 mins/1hour)
1:30pm lunch
3:30pm Afternoon snack
5:30pm Dinner
6pm Bath and wind down time (use the 4s from the book)
7pm Bottle
7:15pm Bed

In the past month he has woken up at 11:30 and 1pm, and has been up for an hour or so if we don't bring him into bed. I tried the CIO a f times but think I went to him to early.

We have been bringing him to bed for a couple of weeks after trying the PU/PD technique.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

If you have read Tracy's books then you will be aware that she (nor we on this site) advocate CIO or CC as part of sleep training as it can actually make the situation you are trying to resolve a lot harder & also dmage the bond of trust between you & your LO.

From his age & looking at his routine I would say that he is probably in the 2:1 nap transition which can be a little tricky & cause NW's (night wakings) & EW's (early wakings). The link below might be useful for you to read:

http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=41952.0

I would suggest that you push the AM nap a little later. Having a nap too early in the AM after an EW can actually re-inforce the EW as LO's see it as an extension of their night sleep. I would aim for a nap at 9am to start with (you might want to gradually push this back over a period of a few days to prevent OT). Most Mum's during the 2:1 transition do either a long AM/short PM nap or vice versa, from your routine it looks like you are doing long AM/short PM?

His 2nd nap is also too soon after the AM nap, only 1.5hrs A-time, is that right? He needs to have more balanced A-times throughout the day & I think that this is also causing some of your problems. His A-time after the PM nap is really long..6hrs which is way more than he can handle at his age & after a short nap. I would suggest that you push this nap back so your day could look a little something like this:

AM nap: 9am (1.5hrs if you are doing long AM nap)
WU: 10.30am
PM nap: 2.30pm(45mins/1hr)
BT: Asleep by 7pm

The link below might also be useful to you as it shows you examples of LO's routines of a similar age to your DS:

It does sound like expecting to be taking into your bed has become a bit of a habit. I assume that PU/PD has not been effective? How have you been doing it? You could also try GW or WI/WO (see below link):

I'm conscious that I've given you a lot of information her so have a read through the links & come back to me with any questions you may have!  :)

Thank you so much for your advice. It was against my better judegemetn to try CIO but my DH tried it while i was sick in hospital and the few days after when I was still stuck in bed.

I will try to gradually delay LO morning nap and afternoon nap.

We did successfully GW last night and only had two awake times for 15 minutes each.

Thank you so much
