Drop catnap or push off bedtime?
« on: June 21, 2011, 21:15:46 pm »
My 5 month old is on a 4 hour EASY, and takes two naps a day usually from 9-11 and 1-3. Naps are usually 1.5-2 hours long. In the past, he had been napping again from like 4 to 430 and then going down for the night around 630.
Now, he is not tired enough to take a nap at 4, but once he is tired for a nap, it is already too late. If he doesn't take a 3rd nap, he cannot make it much past 615. Last night, he skipped the 3rd nap, went down at 615, and woke up at 5am. He ate at 5, then stayed in his crib till 645 (don't know if he slept or just played)
He often still wakes up between 2 and 4 am for a feed, but I think he had been going to sleep for the night undertired which was contributing a lot to the night-wakings.
Basically I'm wondering if I should drop the 3rd nap and just put him to bed at 615 which seems really early, or let him take a nap at like 5, and then make his bedtime later (im not sure what time).
If his bedtime is 615 at 5 months, will it get a little later as he gets older, or will that stay his bedtime.
Sorry for rambling-TIA!

You could do either.  I would get rid of the CN though to push him to sleep more at night as opposed to day.

When I dropped the CN, I pushed her to as close to her regular BT as I could for a week or so, then I got mean and kept her up until her BT ;)  She adjusted after a couple of weeks.  We just kept things very simple and quiet with floor play, books, singing only for the last 90 minutes to avoid overstimulation and a meltdown.

Is your DS closer to 5 months or 6 months?

He is just shy of 5 months, so it seems a little early to be dropping the catnap, but I tend to agree with you. I skipped his third nap again today and he will probably go to sleep at 615 again. As he gets a little older, if his second nap finishes at 3, will his bedtime get naturally later, or does it generally tend to stay the same?

I'm not one to ask - my DD is an EW queen!  Bed at 7pm, up at 5am ;)  Different BT makes little difference with her.

By 6 months, she was doing a 4 hr to A BT though :)  Sounds like your LO is low sleep needs if he could drop the CN already ;)  My DD is on the low side...
