Dreamfeeding makes my baby wake up earlier!
« on: July 29, 2011, 19:30:40 pm »
Has anyone else experienced dream feeding making their baby wake earlier? My four month old usually sleeps through the night from 7pm ish to 6/630 am if she has her five feeds a day, the last one being around 630pm. On nights I dream feed her around 1030/11pm, she tends to wake earlier - around 5/530am. Any ideas as to why?

The dreamfeed doesn't neccessarily work for every baby - I know with mine they would be sleeping until 3 or 4am until I introduced the dreamfeed, then started to wake up at 1am, then 4am etc etc. With dd I just didn't bother trying! I think for some it can interrupt their natural sleep cycle and cause more wakings. It can also take up to a couple of weeks to kick in and take effect so that's worth bearing in mind too. So she is sleeping through - is there a reason why you are wanting to introduce a dreamfeed?

I introduced it at first to see if she would take it which she does. She actually seems quite hungry and feeds for a decent length of time. I also did it to see of it would make her sleep longer and wake later. Bit confused now as I wonder if she needs the extra feed as she is taking it , although she is not waking up and asking for it?

Well personally I would only do it if it was making her sleep longer. Are you still doing it? Is it working? What time is she waking now??

I did it again last night, only because we gave her the bottle (we are trying to retrain her to retake it as she started refusing it some weeks back) and she didn't drink very much so I was worried she hadn't had enough to eat. I'm not going to do the DF anymore though as I don't think there is a need for it, even if she'll take it and if I keep giving it to her, she'll come to expect it

We had this problem with DS--granted he was fully on formula when it started happening.  We found out that it was hitting his sleep cycle wrong.  We played with the timing a bit, shuffled the DF forward by ~30 minutes and it worked.  That said, like Jackie mentioned, sometimes LOs just do better without the DF at all.  I'd go with what works best for her and you. :)
